Peru turned against Fujimori when it was Fujimori who broke the backs of the Sendero Luminoso and the Tupac Amaru... they wanted Toledo, the former "shoeshine boy" and the beloved of the liberal, marxist media. Our own State Department never missed an opportunity to snipe at Fujimori; however, given the high number of marxists within our State Deparmtment that isn't very surprising.
