My favorite is South Orange County, CA. The sheriff, and the people who elect him, are very gun-friendly, i.e. it's very easy to get a CCW from the county. The beach cities are heartbreakingly beautiful (I happen to love Laguna Beach). There is nearby skiing at Big Bear in the winter. There is a lot of open space, for biking or hiking. There are two HUGE metro areas (LA and San Diego) nearby, where you can buy ANYTHING you want, from durians to yachts. The public schools are as good as can be expected, and there's even a few (not so good) universities, including a University of California franchise in Irvine. I live there now, and I love it. That said, I'm thinking about moving to Portland, Oregon for work. Anyone have any comments about Portland?

Portland is nice, but be sure to take a good umbrella. You will need it.

Don't move to Portland. I live in WA state and WA is bad enough. Portland has all these land restriction laws, so they put these large homes on postage stamp size lots. The place is leftist heaven. Remember the refusal to interrogate the Arab immigrants, following 9/11?
