But here's the creepy part, (let us pray!)
"In a statement released by the White House, Bush said he will sign the bill despite some misgivings about it."

If Bush takes the posistion that he has sworn to uphold the constitution and he believes that after confering with his cabinent that certain parts of the bill are unconstitutional he has the power to stop any prosecution under the bill.

The result is the parts good for GOP are passed, the parts that are not constitutional are not enforced and the Rats learn not to mess with Bush.

I used to think Bush had to veto it to avoid the "no new taxes" hammer, but I now see another way that would work even better.

holy crap...if Bush did that, I would vote for him even if he opened the floodgates to all illegal Mexicans everywhere...lol. He could pretty much do anything and still get my vote in 2004 if he did such an amazing action.

I understand now this is just an option you have heard being discussed as possible from within the WH. Needless to say it sounds intriguing and I would liek to see it done.....if just for history's sake even.

Signing it doesn't mean he will enforce the unconstitional parts. He will still keep his word to us as well as his oath if he states he will refuse to enforce the parts which are unconstitutional. Check and mate.

Can Dick Cheney short-circuit the whole issue by simply refusing to sign the enrolled bill, thus preventing it from even being delivered to Bush? Or would Byrd be able to sign it over Cheney's objections?

That's it. I am writing a letter now to my local paper withdrawing my support for Bush and calling him a lowlife scum who walks on the Constituion. He is filth.

Yeh, but BB also said that the President would look like he hadn't made up his mind whether or not to sign it.

Isn't that the meaning of "reservations" ?

He knows that the congress have enough votes to overide his veto

Only if they can scrape up 7 more votes in the Senate, at minimum. It takes 2/3 to overide a veto. That's 67 Senators. I've forgotten what the vote was in the House.

We need to blame both parties for this travesty. The House is still controled by the Republicans, many of them having been elected in the '94 Elections which won control of the House for their party, due to the support of gunowners and conservatives. Then they stab us in the back. Isn't there some saying about not bringing a knife to a gunfight?

By choosing not to enforce certain sections, it is the equivalent of a line item veto. The GOP gets the parts it wants while Bush holds the line on the constitution.

Yes, it is but the whitehouse.gov message was that the President will sign it. I would say that "will sign it" trumps "reservations" doesn't it?

It is not a stain on either the Constitution or the Democrats who don't give a whit about the Constitution or any other law so long as everyone but Democrats is forced to comply.

Do not ask questions for more details because I cannot give them. Suffice to say that the proposed plan of action for that moment, if that is Bush's choice, has passed my eyes.

One question...........is the President aware of his options?
