, two were kidnapped by strangers, according to state Department of Justice figures.

And how many, of those two, were kidnapped from their home while their parents were doping it up and scrogging in the garage, or too tired from a night of partying to hear anything or check on alarm lights and open doors.

"...check on alarm lights and open doors."

When we lived in New Orleans, we once had a sort of crime wave in our neighborhood--cars and houses burgled while the residents were at work. The NOPD sent a rep to talk to the neighborhood association, and he had some interesting things to say about unlocked doors. He said that most house and car entries were crimes of convenience. Something as simple as a locked door (and remember, one of the VD's doors was not only unlocked, but open) would deter those looking for a quick and easy take. He said a simple, locked door (car or house) would deter most burglars. He also said that a determined burglar could get past anything you put in his way--but that this brand of burglar was pretty rare.

I know Danielle is not a thing. In fact, a little child is more precious than a television or a home theatre, and should be guarded much more carefully. Nevertheless, if what had been stolen at the VDs had been a television or home theatre setup, the insurance company might have refused to pay their claim because of their negligence.

Satanist Child Killing"

"...The murder of a 12-year-old boy at the hands of an occult fanatic could not easily have been prevented, according to an inquiry into child protection measures. The year-long investigation concluded that no-one else was to blame for the death of Diego Pineiro.

[...]

The court hearing in to the murder heard Crowley, who had gone swimming with the youngster, had also bought the boy presents.

No sexual abuse had taken place during their friendship..."

Unless Brenda made a habit of shutting down the bars.

From Damon's testimony at the PH ref letting dog out to use the bathroom at 1:45:

Q: Do you know what time that was?
A: Around 1:45 I think.

Q: Did you check the clock at that time?
A: No.

Q: So this again is an estimate?
A: This is an estimate.

Q: Was Brenda home by then?
A: No.

Q: Where did you take the dog?
A: I let her out back. And then let her back in. Again watched her while she went out.

Q: What door?
A: Through the sliding glass door. Let her back in. Went back upstairs to the bedroom. Left the bedroom door open.

Q: Why?
A: Because I knew Brenda would be home soon because I knew Dads closed at 2AM. So with the bedroom door open the dog was wherever the dog was I don't know. I jumped in bed and I watched TV for a little while

I think he is an opportunist...one that took advantage of a situation. If he could hear noise from the garage, he knew the parents were um busy.

That's what stumps me. The whole thing would be more credible if there was a "garage party." According to sworn testimony of Damon and Brenda, there was no "garage party" that night, and no stipulation made (whereas there were stipulations as to Brenda lying dancing with DW and about Danielle getting over/through the gate). If there really was a “garage party,” why no stipulation to that?

Someone mentioned ted bundy...he could be like him.

Well, if DW is like Ted Bundy, he'd be a serial killer, but with only one known victim (?). He would also be a psychopath. But DW can’t be a psychopath because he flunked the polygraph, he sweats profusely when nervous, and he shakes when scared/nervous. I just don't know how DW would be categorized if he is guilty. I give up. But if he is guilty, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts this case will be studied by criminologists and forensic psychologists for decades to come.

Two children out of 6,342 does not seem like abductions like this are at all common.

They are rare, statistically speaking. And out of those two, how many were abducted from their homes (as in, the perp went inside the home to snatch them)? And how many cases where there was an adult male present in the home when child was snatched? And a big dog to boot? I would imagine that, statistically, this is very, very rare indeed.

"According to sworn testimony of Damon and Brenda..."

The problem with their "sworn testimony" is that swearing on a Bible apparently is meaningless to them. Brenda also said in "sworn testimony" that she didn't dance with Westerfield; then later amended her "sworn testimony" to "didn't recall" (how Clintonesque) dancing with him. Her word isn't worth much, and given the number of story changes, neither is Damon's.

The article didn't say how many might have been taken from the home--it could be neither of the two. It really is rare, which is precisely why this is a "newsworthy" story--more for that reason than the parents' lifestyle, which the U.S. media has mostly put in the background.

Hey, Fres... re the picture of the door to side of VD house, looks like someone ran into the door jamb with the lawnmower. The outside trim is ripped up from the doorknob down.

No kidding....I suppose that the postage stamp size lawn is quite a chore to mow.....when one has had several hits of BVD's Maui-Waui!!!  LOL

I see what you mean. However, it came out in the PH that Damon lied to police two or three times that no one came upstairs that night. (Barbara was in master bedroom.) He had to come clean on that, though.

My bet is that other members of the "pizza party" told police otherwise. (What kind of deal did they make with drug-dealer Keith to make him spill the beans about that night?) Also, police would have had fibre evidence that Barbara had been upstairs.

And police would have found fibre (and other!) evidence in the garage of such a party, had it actually occurred.

Warning......liberal pabulum barf alert.....

Bonds grow tighter in Danielle's community

The father-daughter dance takes on new appreciation

SCOTT LINNETT / Union-Tribune

Taylor Tso, 7, receives last-minute touch-ups
from her mother, Danielle Tso, before the
 father-daughter dance at her school.

By Eleanor Yang
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

March 22, 2002

There was a moment last night, while swaying to romantic tunes at the father-daughter dance and smiling at his radiant girl, that Roger Tso thought of the couple who would not twist and shout or pose for pictures.

The void left by the death of 7-year-old Danielle van Dam has weighed heavily on her Sabre Springs elementary school and the community. Parents have struggled for answers to their children's difficult questions. Classmates have had to deal with the fact that their friend will never return.

For families like the Tsos, the tragedy has helped strengthen bonds. For the last few weeks, Tso, a principal at a nearby elementary school, has left work a little earlier, trying to fit in more tickling sessions, more bedtime reading, more early-morning hugs.

He treasures each in a way he did not before.

"My relationship with my daughter has become a little more special," Tso said. "If I can get any meaning from this horrific event, it's that as a father, I can cherish these moments with my daughter."

The Creekside Elementary School Father-Daughter Dance, postponed twice because of the community's grief over Danielle, was full of moments that more than 300 daughters and fathers will cherish.

Seven-year-old Taylor Tso was charmed, dined and dazzled.

"It's as exciting as my birthday," she said, flashing a gap-toothed grin.

Taylor still remembers the event a year ago, when she boogied to pop and funk songs like "Who Let the Dogs Out," and sipped punch that splashed out of a fountain.

Stories circulated last year of a father who flew home from a business trip in Chicago for the dance, then flew back after.

"I was like, jeeze," Tso said. "It's a really big deal. . . . And this year has even more meaning because my neighbor a few doors down won't be taking his daughter, and I get to do this."

Taylor started her primping hours before the dance. She found the perfect dress weeks ago with her mother. It was a pink and yellow lace gown that cascaded to her ankles. She had picked out blue and yellow glitter for her face and hot-pink nail polish for her fingers and toes.

Yesterday afternoon, Taylor sat impatiently while her mother curled her long black hair, applied mascara and lip gloss, and brushed her face and arms with glitter.

"Let me see my beautiful daughter," Tso said, watching from the side. He dropped on one knee and presented her with a pink rose-and-carnation corsage that was bigger than her hand.

"Is this real, Papa?" she joked, poking at the petals. "It's beautiful."

Tso, still on his knee, gently stroked her hand and kissed her on the cheek.

The Tsos have been nearly inseparable for the past few weeks. At night, both Taylor and her 4-year-old brother, Griffin, squeeze onto their father's lap to watch the Disney Channel. They take turns playing games on the Internet with their dad. On weekends, Tso has developed a no-working, no-golfing policy, to fit in more family bike riding, in-line skating and trips to Disneyland.

"The waking hours together are just too few," Tso said.

He's afraid to let his children out of his sight. They are no longer allowed to bike around Sabre Springs unaccompanied or go on sleepovers. Taylor and Danielle had slept over at each other's houses several times. Tso doesn't know if he will ever let her go to another sleepover.

"That trust was taken away from us," Tso said.

But he's hopeful that things might return to some sense of normalcy.

Yesterday evening, after his children had chased each other through the house, after Taylor had pranced and twirled in front of a mirror, Tso escorted his daughter to his white Miata. He buckled her seat belt, careful not to catch her hair, and they darted off.

His license plate read "TSO NLUV."

There was blood found on the floor of the garage near the door leading outside.....from the diagram & testimony I infered there were two spots labeled 1 and 2, one of which may be a fibre or hair ..only one item was identified at the Prelim...not certain about this 2nd item but I got that impression...

Wonder what they have left to look forward to in junior high and high school, limo rides and implants? Sorry, this kid is 7 let her be 7.

Hmmm, my apologies.. using the word "common" was innappropriate. I was basing it on national stats, but I can't find what I read before..if you were to say 2 home abductions by strangers per county..that would be a lot..but statistically, you're right.

Let's look at it from a different angle

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/ascii/saycrle.txt

"When juvenile victims experienced multiple offenses, the most serious other charge in 47% of the incidents was another sex offense, 21% involved a non-sexual assault, 17% a kidnaping, and in 8% a burglary. "

"Younger juvenile victims were more likely than older juvenile victims to be sexually assaulted with other victims. The proportion of youth victimized with others was greater for juvenile victims under age 12 (25%) than for older juveniles (13%). However, within the younger juvenile group, this age-related pattern was reversed; that is, youth ages 6 through 11 were more likely to be victimized with others than were youth under age 6. Twenty-one percent of victims under age 6 were victimized with others compared to 28% of victims ages 6 through 11."

Location of sexual assault

" The most common non-resident locations for sexual assaults of juveniles were roadways, fields/woods, schools, and hotels/motels. For adults the most likely locations after a residence included roadways, fields/woods, hotels/motels, parking lots, and commercial/office buildings."

Time of day of sexual assault

The neighbor who invited Megan Kanka to see his puppy was a twice-convicted pedophile who raped and murdered her, then dumped her body in a nearby park. Megan's grieving parents said they never would have let their daughter travel their neighborhood freely if they had been alerted to the presence of a convicted sex offender living across the street from their residence. Congress passed the Federal version of "Megan's Law," another amendment to the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, in 1996. -3[104 P.L. 145, 100 Stat. 1345.] It required States to establish some form of community notification by September 1997.
