My friend, politics makes for strange bedfellows. I'm prepared to shake hands with a Rat if he will work with us to save our beloved country.

You should consider the story-telling business. This is a major embarrassment for Bush. Mexico does not care about how our system of govt works, it only needed to see results which it will not get. I am all about good relations with neighbors, but believe that strong fences make better neighbors.

Nothing personal, but your theory is puzzling and hints of wishful spin. First off, you're assuming most citizens WANT amnesty granted, and thus would be mad at Byrd for killing it. Secondly, are you saying Bush's way of keeping his word is to pretend to support something he said he opposed, even going as far as pushing through a bill, so the Dems can kill it? Too clever by half, I think...

It's fashionable now that anytime Bush abandons conservative principles and moves left, someone "explains" the grand scheme behind it all. Yeah, Bush really showed them Dems by removing any hope of school vouchers, didn't he? He'll sure fix their wagon by signing CFR!

To a checker player I am sure your view is correct, but to a chess player it makes perfect sense. Should I king you now?

Bush doesnt get blamed for the immigration clause, while the Democrats get blamed for its EXCLUSION!! Every one here is happy, but the immigrant population blames the Dems instead of Bush!

You're exceptionally preceptive. You've nailed the 'strategery' behind this to a 'T'. ;^)

How much you want to bet that nothing will change because of this? If you have such a strong belief on your hypothesis, why dont we enter into a wager here.

"It is lunacy — sheer lunacy — that the president would request, and the House would pass, such an amnesty at this time. That point seems obvious to the American people, if not to the administration," Mr. Byrd said on the Senate floor.

Might as well - apparently I'm just a pawn in Bush's vote buying schemes.

Am I imagining something? Or did Byrd and the Dems just walk into a suckerpunch? Lemme see if I have this straight. Byrd and the Dems are opposing the "pet issue" for millions of Hispanic voters, while GWB and the Republicans are now seen as being "on our side" by those same Hispanics. Am I leaving anything out?

I'm *definitely* re-evaluating my assessment of the man. And I definitely can no longer paint a wide brush saying that all dems are terrible. Mr. Byrd is on our side on this one.
