Even the grand poobah of the anti-immigration(Sabertooth) threads has admitted that this bill is not a blanket amnesty.

This bill was focused at mostly at families to keep them together and there was about 200,000 people who could apply.

And there were many needed reforms in this bill that got lost in the hyperbole and fear.

Where was he when a President of his party was weakening the INS, and fast tracking millions of illegals in time for '96?

He is looking to be bought, plain and simple, and for those of you to simplistic to see it, you ought to try thinking things ALL THE WAY through once in a while...Perspective can be a beautiful thing. 245(i) is not amnesty. It is the cheapest most effective way to get those that are going to become legal anyway, legal. The INS is better served getting them processed than chasing them down, deporting them, and then processing their paperwork 6 months down the road.

Some have been excessive in their praise of Byrd, some have been muted, and some, like me, haven't commented.

Sadly enough the right wing media hysteria about this matter was woefully uninformed. Rush ranted and raved for days, losing all credibility among those who actually understood the bill.

It would have helped tho if a single person from the administration had taken the time to actually explain the bill and it's purpose.

Wish we had a more informed radio talk show host who took the time understand and then comment on various issues rather than this knee jerk hyperbole.

When you start applauding KKK members, then you'll see why many of us who are pro-immigration ultimately end up in discussions of racism. It is the ONLY factor that ultimately separates your arguments from every other logical argument about immigration, namely that there was MORE immigration, and HIGHER RATES of immigration per capita in MANY earlier years, including the ENTIRE DECADE from 1900-1910; that MANY other groups, including GERMANS were far less assimilated than you think Hispanics are (there were 27 DAILY German newspapers in 1910); that these groups were viewed as a direct national security threat, as opposed to some nebulous concerns over "Aztlan" or whatever.

So when this comes up again, all you need say is, "I stand with Klansman Byrd."

Geron, you will find those who are so rabid about immigration---and hey, I'm for CONTROLLED AND LEGAL immigration---are at the core quite racist. When you separate out all the arguments (in the past we've had more immigration; higher RATES of immigration; higher immigration per population; LESS ASSIMILABLE immigrants, such as the Germans), the only pole left standing (no pun) is race.

I really didn't want to come to that conclusion, but when I see any Freepers standing with Byrd---especially after the apologists for Buchanan kept trying to claim that they "really aren't racists," then the writing is on the wall.

What needs to happen is for these people who argue so rapidly against "illegals" need to begin proposing some LEGAL plans to keep families togehter; to continue to admit Hispanics and other immigrant groups; and YES, TO SECURE THE BORDERS against illegals. But the latter without the former, I'm sorry to say, does involve racism.

I stilll disagree about the ed bill. It does NOT "kill vouchers." It leaves a tiny window open, that the Supreme Court decision in June will blow as wide as an asteroid. Moreover, by DEMANDING accountability and competition, the education reform side has dealt a serious blow to the unions.

And while we're at it, don't forget who KILLED vouchers in California---the Christian Right, afraid of government interference in the schools.
