Byrd put party before all and violated his solemn constitutional oath.

Sadly so did at least 10 GOP Senators that day but many of the same cursing Byrd will praise those others. Byrd was looking out after his seat. Byrd voted because of the will of his state on this matter and for no other reason. West Virginia is a state which does not hold kindly in it's heart being undercut by overseas labor and our government supporting such. I'm not against overseas labor but I think import taxes should be a substancial portion of our tax collections rather than picking the pockets of our own wokers. I support import taxes as a means to fund government and keep America working.

Bush wanted this bill every bit as much as the Dems.

He wanted it even more than the Dems. Remember the speech he recently gave to a group of Hispanic businessman, talking about Mexico, it was mentioned on the big Tancredo thread? He wants this very much.

For those who deny that it is an amnesty, here's the text:

SEC. 607. EXTENSION OF DEADLINE FOR CLASSIFICATION PETITION AND LABOR CERTIFICATION FILINGS.

California is under siege. The masses of immigrants has inundated the infrastructure and the quality of life in rural, agricultural areas is has diminished to third world levels. The saftey net (welfare), public hospitals, public education, law enforcement, the local courts/jails and transportation are swamped by these masses.

At the federal level neither the districts courts nor the INS has the budget or the man power to cope with the problem. Since the mid 1990's the INS in central California has strictly been limited to investigating and prosecuting the commercial end of alien smuggling (the "coyote")

The need for cheap labor is not an issue. There is such a vast labor pool of immigrants that registered unemployment is near 7% and the figure is probably closer to 20% if illegal aliens are entered into the stats.

The issue is and has been for the last twenty years the willingness of our federal and state government to tolerate illegal immigration. The numbers are snowballing and few have a workable solution in sight.

43's attempt to pander to this unregulated mob is simply unprincipled and unforgiveable.

The bill was fine other than the amnesty/extension/whatever you want to call it. Byrd has an ACU rating of 31 so he's not quite as bad as the other Dems. He voted in favor of Ashcroft as well as the Helms Boy Scout amendment which barely passed.

I just can't imagine how the amnesty provision helps Bush among anyone other than illegals. It was a dud in the polls when he tried it the first time, before the attacks!

Actually they were conquers. Read your history and learn a valueable lesson from what eventually happened to the Indians. They were at first all too eager for the most part to please the new comers. Now you tell me. Who's culture is prevailent today? Indian or Euro-American? I rest my case.

The issue is not who was here and who is here. You said that people who leave one area and go to another uninvited are lawbreakers. I wouldn't call our ancestors nor illegal immigrants lawbreakers. They're doing what the human race has done for thousands of years, always moving to greener grass. It's our job to keep them from doing that if that's what we want to do. They're just doing what comes naturally.

There's another thread that says this bill only applies to those that are here legally. Are you sure you've read this bill?

I'm sorry sir but thats a distortion of the facts and is an attempt to downplay this for what its not.

I dont feel we should really be giving incentive to people to break the law. We have legal avenues to becoming a citizen in this country. Those processes are set by the legislators, who are elected by We The People. When that process is ignored, to a certain extent it shows contempt for We The People, Our elected representatives and to some degree as well, our Nation as a whole.

Conservatism is about ethics, the rule of law and accountability. It is a little more just an easily disposable plank for corporate interests.

Please try and remember that.

Show me the written laws of the Native Indians saying go away or ask first. My point is we do have laws which are for used to enter this nation. It is plainly known a visa is required for working here IF you are not a citizen. Why have any law? Let's toss them all OK? Want to see how long we last? It's not uninvited as you want to down play it. Are you going to also insist a thief in your home is an uninvited guest therefore worthy of all your possessions for entering your house through illegal means? Yes it is the same thing. It is robbing American Tax Payers It is taking JOBS of Americans. Why is this so hard for some to comprehend? I believe for the most part many support this are shall we say in need of cheap house servants, pickers, ect? Joe Schmuck gets his bacon cooked in the morning and house cleaned for $2 an hour. Meantime his servants kids go to our schools, use our health care, and draw SSI. But hey thats a good bargain on that maid huh?

Correction. There's an anonymous article sourced to the Wall Street Journal that implies that some of those immigrants who would benefit form an extension of 245i originally came to this country legally.

He wants this very much.

I think what is clear is that he wants to be seen to support this very much. If it is not passed, nearly everyone will forget it, except for the people who wanted it, and their support for Bush will be increased. Meantime, with its defeat, those who oppose it will forget it for more timely concerns at the time of the election.

Section 245(i) of the Act allows an alien to apply to adjust status under section 245 notwithstanding the fact that he or she entered without inspection, overstayed, or worked without authorization.

So does it reward illegal aliens or not? Some say it does, some say it doesn't.

Once again...

Section 245 of the Act allows an alien to apply for adjustment of status to that of a lawful permanent resident (LPR) while in the United States if certain conditions are met. The alien must have been inspected and admitted or paroled, be eligible for an immigrant visa and admissible for permanent residence, and, with some exceptions, have maintained lawful nonimmigrant status. The alien must also not have engaged in unauthorized employment. Section 245(i) of the Act allows an alien to apply to adjust status under section 245 notwithstanding the fact that he or she entered without inspection, overstayed, or worked without authorization.
LINK.

Last week's 245(i) extension was specifically about illegals.

Letting Illegals stay = Amnesty for those Illegals.

Those who say otherwise are incorrect, lying, or delusional.

I'm sorry sir but thats a distortion of the facts and is an attempt to downplay this for what its not.

To say that people are lawbreakers for moving to greener grass is to say that every people through history were lawbreakers. It's up to the current residents to keep migrating people out by force.

So you are of the opinion that this rewards illegal aliens. There's another thread that says this only applies to people who are here legally. Explain and document if you can.

Conservatism is about ethics, the rule of law and accountability. It is a little more just an easily disposable plank for corporate interests.

Most corporate interests are my interests. Corporations make the food I eat, the fighters jets that protect me, the clothes on my back. Corporations are my customers when I provide my labor for them for a price. I'm a pro-business Republican. The anti-business rhetoric isn't going to convince me of anything.

Please try and remember that.

I will remember that it's the corporations and the people that run them that help make America great.
