O Malley Smear Campaign Against Jim Ryan Intensifies (Illinois Governor's Race)

From my e-mail box:

A day after State Senator Patrick O’Malley’s campaign admitted that its key financial backer printed a grossly distorted mailing in Southern Illinois suggesting Jim Ryan supports gay marriages, the Chicago Tribune reported that recorded phone messages were blanketing the state with more lies and distortions attacking Jim Ryan.

The lies and distortions exactly mirror those being made by O’Malley.

The O’Malley campaign has not answered the question whether it is behind the calls.

The following message is being received in southern Illinois:

Hello, my name is Terry and I am with the Bi-Gay-and Lesbian Federation. I’m calling you today to ask you to join me in supporting Jim Ryan for governor. Jim Ryan supports gay rights and was recognized for his support of gay rights by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in their endorsement of Ryan. Like you, Jim Ryan thinks sexual orientation should be included in the civil rights code of the Illinois Constitution, opening the door to gay marriages as in other states, like Vermont. On Tuesday, stand up for gay rights and vote for Jim Ryan, Republican for Governor. Thank you.

The following message is being received in northern Illinois:

Hello, my name is John Pulley and I am with IL Republicans for Honest Government. Join me in voting to clean up the corruption in state government by voting for Patrick O’Malley for Governor. Recently, it has been revealed that Jim Ryan knew about the licensees for bribes scandal, but Jim Ryan chose to protect George Ryan rather than keep his promise to root out public corruption; even after 39 people were convicted and even after children died. On Tuesday say no to corruption by voting for Patrick O’Malley for Governor.

“Patrick O’Malley must believe that a campaign is a game where truth and integrity don’t matter,” Ryan said.

The Southern Illinoisan reported this morning that a mailing is being distributed throughout Southern Illinois suggesting that Jim Ryan favors gay marriages. The article points out that Jim Ryan does not favor gay marriages.

O’Malley’s campaign can’t even shoot straight on who was behind the mailing.

A spokesman told the Southern Illinoisan that the mailing was produced by Family Taxpayers Network headed by Jack Roeser, a man who has poured nearly $500,000 into O’Malley’s campaign. Roeser denied being responsible for the mailing in both the Southern Illinoisan and Chicago Tribune.

Roeser and O’Malley have unleashed a blitz of mail pieces riddled with false statements about Jim Ryan.

Among the lies:

• Jim Ryan supports gay marriages. FALSE. Jim Ryan has always opposed gay marriages.

• O’Malley continues to state Jim Ryan never formed a public corruption unit in his office. FALSE. The unit was formed and 35 public officials have been convicted of various crimes.

• O’Malley claims Jim Ryan looked the other way on George Ryan corruption.

AN ABSOLUTE LIE. A federal investigation into corruption was underway that ultimately led to dozens of convictions. A responsible state law enforcement agency would never conduct a parallel investigation on the same set of facts. O’Malley claims that a federal investigation was not underway at the time and the proof he offers: That George Ryan said so.

O’Malley claims in a mailing that Jim Ryan would not ban live birth abortions. FALSE. Jim Ryan supports the ban.

O’Malley claims that Jim Ryan favors an expansion of gambling. FALSE. Jim Ryan opposes an expansion of gambling.

O’Malley claims that Jim Ryan would not reign in George Ryan’s runaway spending. FALSE. Jim Ryan has talked continually about fiscal discipline and has outlined a detailed plan to achieve it. O’Malley makes the claim despite gladly taking $9 million in member pork, including $1 million to buy a municipal golf course. O’Malley also supported a measure to lift tax caps, which amounted to a $389 million tax increase.

O’Malley continues to say that two defendants in a civil lawsuit Jim Ryan filed against Life Education Center were frequent campaign contributors. FALSE. Neither ever gave the campaign any money.

O’Malley’s new campaign ad is an outrageous lie, falsely tying Jim Ryan to the license-for-bribes scandal. The ad includes a photo of Jim Ryan’s head and body where Jim Ryan’s head is suddenly removed.

Ryan’s other opponent, Corinne Wood, is also running a false ad, alleging “kickbacks” and “shake downs.” That ad has been denounced by former Gov. Jim Edgar, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka and Congressman Henry Hyde. Hyde described the ad as a “new low in negative advertising.”

If my vote makes the difference, Patrick O'Malley will come in first. If Corinne Wood were nominated, I would vote fore Jiang Zemin who is more conservative or the Democrat to create the possibility of future victory and to deprive RINOs of their patronage base. If the nominee is Jim Ryan, I may well do the same although, as of now, I might vote for him. If O'Connor, a pro-abort slimebag is nominated Lieutenant Governor under Ryan, I will vote Democrat for certain lest he succeed Dyin' Jim Ryan by about June, 2003. I am still not hearing the basis of your expertise as to why corruption, malfeasance and misfeasance are qualifications for winning an Illinois gubernatorial primary. Those of us who actually live here have to live with the result. Out of state smarty-pants moderate dilletantes do not.

The incumbent governor GEORGE Ryan is NOT running again except from a probable indictment. The candidate we are trashing is the Attorney General JIM Ryan who is running with a brain tumor so long as he may live until election day and so long as his own corruption, malfeasance and misfeasance do not catch up with him.

That strikes me as a rhetorical question. And I suspect you are wound up too tight.

You know what? You are right. You stay in the GOP where your primary vote will be crushed by those who are committed to pro-life, pro-gun, anti-tax, anti-lavender, and the other normal GOP positions. I would definitely miss the fun of helping to crush RINOs at the polls. Yankee fans would have a lot less fun if there were no Red Sox fans whose hearts are available for annual crushing. You won't publicly defend your beliefs. You just keep up the old RINO death song: "Only RINOs can win! Only RINOs can win. We have no programs and no ideas. Only RINOs can win!" Love your government school systems too. Nice job.

Actually it is a real question and I am not surprised that, as a RINO, you lack the guts to answer it. Dinner time. Bye, bye, for now!

By running against the incumbent governor (whom you know I am no fan of) they have given the RATS all the ammo they need to go against the winner. All the candidates have been guilty of this stupidity.

Seems the other way around to me. If they don't campaign against George Ryan, they'll be tied to him by the democrat. The rats will hardly need any new ammo. Ryan himself gave them all they could need. The only question is, will they be able to use it and make it stick?

Jim Ryan's REFUSAL to prosecute a liberal Protestant hospital named (I kid you not) Christ Hospital where the institution has a policy of inducing premature labor at the 5 month stage so that "unwanted" babies can be born alive and then abandoned within the hospital to die without care?

This is happening in America? What an outrage! My baby girl twins were born premature five years ago. They were so precious, so delicate and helpless. They are so precious. How could a civilized people do this?

Sorry if I sound melodramatic. But, I am moved to tears to read this.

"Sen. O'Malley is the principled pro-life candidate for governor of Illinois in the March 19 Republican primary. His opponent, Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan, has repeatedly refused to intervene to stop hospital infanticide. The lying media has attempted to suppress O'Malley's candidacy, as it always attempts to suppress the truth about abortion and infanticide to which he and Jill Stanek have testified. O'Malley has the courage and the resolve to fight his way through this thicket of deception, and an army of grassroots pro-lifers is following him. Sen. O'Malley, and Jill Stanek – who is raising the same banner in her race for the state legislature in the 81st District – deserve the fervent support of all defenders of life, and truth."--Alan Keyes

The first Ryan was dirty going into office. I knew it and didn't vote for him. If I, a nobody in the political world knew it, those with connections in the GOP had to know it too. Still, they put him forth as our man. Discussing! Now, we have Ryan II. If he wins, the RATS will rip him to shreds in November. A win for Ryan guarantees a RAT governor for Illinois.

You are not being melodramatic. You are telling the truth. The world has gone absolutely nuts since Roe vs. Wade began the holocaust of 42.5 million to date. Civilized people do not do this. They sleep through it or fight it.

You are one more reason why Illinois is a terrific place in the opinion of this transplanted New Englander. Let's pull this out for O'Malley!

If I still lived in Illinois and as a conservative, I would cast my vote for Mr. O'Malley in the primary and then support either him or Ryan in the general election. The governorship in this important state must not fall into DemoRAT hands.

I've been working the streets for O'Malley and will continue til the polls close tonight. Believe me, it's been a bloody battle, and O'Malley was not the first to go neg. It is sad it has come to this.

Your old friend Jim Ryan has totally compromised himself in backroom deals, including support of Daley's O'Hare expansion program. He never expected such a hotly contested primary, and that's why he been totally evasive on the issues throughout the campaign.

If O'Malley cannot pull off the upset, I will hold my nose and support Ryan in the fall. The very thought of HOTROD in the gov's mansion and Lisa Madigan as AG is enough to make me ill.

I have been disturbed by this for weeks not just these antics. How can anyone trust a guy who one day is ripping the heart out of his opponent then turns around the next and solumnly declares that Caligula has become Solomon? This is a very large hurdle for belief in political integrity to overcome.

I know there is an inevitable amount of negative campaigning to be expected but the vicousness of this campaign is much worse than usual. The RATS are not going for the throat like this and it will be much easier for them to support the winner without looking like complete hypocrits.

I believe the ammo given the RATS by the Republicans will come back to haunt them this fall. In my mind the Republicans should be campaigning by telling voters how they will govern in their benefit not by making noise about tenuous connections to corruption which are not clear or firm for any of the candidates.

It appears that the Senate race is being conducted with much more seriousness and dignity and some of the other races. Save the brickbats for the RATS.
