Senate Panel Rejects Pickering

WASHINGTON - The Democratic-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines Thursday to kill the nomination of Judge Charles Pickering to the appeals court, handing President Bush a stinging defeat in a racially-charged confirmation battle.

In a series of roll calls, the panel also snubbed Bush's request to allow a vote in the full Senate on Pickering, a 64-year-old Mississippian with more than a decade on the bench.

How about Bork himself? He's pretty conservative, no? Too old, perhaps?

LOL! That would fry the Democrats. Couldn't help laughing when I read it.

We could call this kind of delaying/obstructionist tactic 'Pickering Dickering'. I kind of like that one.

The problem in FL was that they had a candidate in Tom Gallagher (top vote getter in FL in 2000) that was going to run for Senate but was convinced to run for Insurance Commissioner instead to give McCollum a clear shot. Big mistake -- Gallagher would have beat Nelson IMO.

We MUST not give up on this.... Keep the pressure on YOUR Senators to bring this vote to the FLOOR for a vote by the FULL senate !!!

DO NOT allow Sen. Leheay and his fellow LIBERALS on the Judiciary Committee to prevent this vote from going to the floor!!!

Sign PETITION to SUPPORT Judge Pickering...

Nothing there about a committee - Senate would mean all 100 senators.

Agreed.

It's internal Senate rules and nothing more.

Procedural crappola!

I would think that if the intent of the founders was to subvert the process they would have modified the clause allowing for procedural blockage and advice and consent "by committee" instead of the "Senate".

I can't argue, but McCollum had bigger name recognition in my mind. I don't understand why he was the lesser candidate - I don't even recognize the opponent you mention.

"If so, can Bush make a recess appointment and put Pickering in without Congress approval??

I think Bush can and I think he might"

I certainly hope you're right! Also, I see several people have said "we will remember Pickering in November". I surely agree with them. It seems ironic, but these people on the panel don't realize what they've done - they have made the same mistake the terrorists made on 9/11 - they have awakened a sleeping bunch of Republicans. While they think they are defeating us, they are in reality motivating us to action; funny, really funny.

And Pickering is going to give up a seat on the lower court bench, a lifetime appointment, and move and take a year assignment at the circuit court?

If Republicans retake the Senate, a recessed appointed Judge Pickering, would be in a position to eventually be nominated to another life term, in an upper court. Stranger things have happened. There are many options open for Bush on this matter. Pickering is 67-68 years old and may be ready to retire soon. I don't know the insider facts. We shall see.

I agree with you. There is some truth in what you say. The Democrats are much better at that type of infighting. Too often, Republicans have a habit of shooting themselves in the foot. We must stay focused

Actually, I believe that most conservatives are generally honest people; thus we have absolutely no idea how to deal with people who are completely without conscience.

I didn't know Pickering was old and getting ready to retire. The theory some have that he offered himself as a stalking horse, a sacrificial lamb, may have some merit.
