[history]
Indian students in Colorado have turned the tables in a debate on racism by naming their intramural basketball team "The Fighting Whities."
The students, at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, chose a white man as a mascot after failing to persuade nearby Eaton High School to drop a nickname they say offends them.

Let's not miss a golden opportunity: let's start naming teams after European ethnicities with all abandon! :-)How about the Rude Frenchmen?
To: chance33_98
Maybe we should change the name to "Thinskins".

And there's already a tribute to France - the Horned Frogs!

My understanding was that a squaw was a female Indian. If terms generally and benignly used for Indians are in fact offensive in their correct definition, we should be educated about that.same understanding here. but, lo, recently we learn that it means something else according to some hyper-technical/hyper-correct etymology (sp?).
the fascinating thing about this, to me, anyway, is that these same language purists have trouble with the word "niggardly," which somehow doesn't seem to rate the same super parsing.

I don't get it, are we supposed to find Whities offensive? If I spent my days drinking Wild Turkey on the reservation and had no desirable skills, maybe I would be bored enough to actually contemplate the effect of team nicknames on my life. Fortunately, I'm not like that.

I just asked for my shirt!
To: Chu Gary
Actually, the term is "horny toad"!
To: PeoplesRepublicOfWashington
No, I'm actually laughing at their creativity!
To: PeoplesRepublicOfWashington
One more thought..... since I'm Irish, maybe I would be offended if they had used, "Fighting Whitie Irish"?! :-]

LOL in Illinois! :-]

oh brother!
To: chance33_98
They may find that their mascot name might turn out to be an omen. Then they can say they saw it coming, lol.

I could go on. Oh please do - by all means! I admire (and am laughing at) your creativity!

This is wrong. It should be the "Flammin' Caucasians!" Or even the "Hooping Honkies"
Hustling Honkies?
Playing Palefaces?
Warrior Whites?
To: Walkingfeather
I thought I was going to be offended and then I remembered I was a redskin.... so never mind. You too?
