I did live at Red House for a while, and I must say that I apologize for the view of Islam that you recieved from those people. As you noticed, the children look unkept, diseased, and like nobody loves them. The parents let their children run around ragged and infected with ringworm and infitego. As for the women, they must wear veils, for that is commanded in the Qur'an. This is non-negotiable, and in my opinion, it is right. Islamically, men also have a dress-code which entails of concealment of the private areas, and a head-covering called a kufi. This is not oppression, but Al Fuqra's leaders go to great legnths to create a type of oppression over their people which smacks of Jim Jones and David Koresh. They move to compounds and they pool all of their money into a common fund which is embezzled by the leadership. They create a type of financial oppression over anybody with any assetts. These people are asked for loans that are never repaid, and their credit is ruined, "for the good of the Jammat (group)". So as you see, everybody is oppressed, not just women. And I would like to reiterate that this is not reflective of Islam. I would encourage any Muslim who witnesses wrongdoing by a fellow Muslim, to work with the authorities. As Muslims, we must be vigiliant in destroying terrorisim and crime in our own groups. By ridding our mosques of undesireables, we are cleaning up the image of Islam. We must not condone or tolerate any wrongdoing by our people. We must stop terrorisim and violence in our communites before we shake our finger at Israel or The New World Order. Allah has commanded us to "enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil." This commandment is ever more important in this post-Spetember 11th world that we live in.

Regarding people pledging their welfare checks, is this still going on today, as far as you know?

Is the Red House in Virginia the largest populated compound in North America?

Are there many other "dissenters" such as yourself?

There is a big problem right there. Distinguishing between true Muslims and false Muslims is not allowed among Muslims. You say the magic words and that's that. When the shooting starts, it might be that those outside Islam will not distinguish true from false Muslims either.

Perhaps it is time for Muslims to adopt the Christian practice of excommunication of heretics.
