PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (AP) - An American peacekeeper has died of a gunshot wound at a U.S. military base in Kosovo, an official said Tuesday.
The body of Pfc. Gary S. Kalinofski, 21, was discovered Monday by fellow soldiers at Camp Magrath, 30 miles east of the province's capital, Pristina.
The cause of Kalinofski's death remained unknown, but did not result from any engagement with hostile forces, said Major James Crews, a spokesman for the U.S peacekeepers in Kosovo.
Authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, Crews added.
Kalinofski had served in Kosovo since November. He had been assigned to A Company, Task Force 1-32nd Infantry Regiment in Fort Drum, N.Y.
He is survived by his parents, who live in Fayetteville, N.C.
Some 5,000 U.S. soldiers serve as part of the peacekeeping force in Kosovo. In 1999, the United Nations took control of the southern Yugoslav province after an air campaign.

He blew his brains out. Yes, it's fairly common. The French call it "le crapaud" or "the bug." You're lonely and bored and you get a letter from your "significant other" or something and WHAM there's a nice splatter pattern on the wall or you're hanging from your bunk with bootlaces around your neck.
Way too common.
No.
You're welcome to your opinions, but if you think what's happening in Afghanistan isn't war, and if you think American men and women dying over there is something to be made light of...well, IMHO, your opinions are somewhere out in left field.
You seem pretty secure with yourself. I suggest you go to your local VFW, and tell those Vietnam vets how war is really fought (call in air bombardments, then pay the locals to go in the caves).
A tragic, lonely death for this young man. There is only sympathy for his family and friends.
Your comment about paying locals to go into the caves...are you suggesting we're letting Afghanis do the dirty work? How then would you explain 7 U.S. KIA? If we're paying for our fighting to be done, how did they get to be there in the first place?
You've already said you've never been with 5K miles of combat. You don't know what you're talking about, so don't. Talk about it.
You know what I hate about you? The way you threaten me and the way you've turned the situation upside down.
First of all it is this HiJinx, or whatever his name is, who lurks around and then whines to the owner of FreeRepublic when he sees "inapropriate" opinions. The he reports them to Jim Robinson as "abuse". He boasted about it himself!
YOUR WORDS: "You show support for someone who called a FReeper and Vet, who had a different opinion, a GESTAPO."
You're turning the whole situation around! HiJinx DID NOT HAVE ANY OPINION, I DID. And HiJinx didn't like it!
I merely used "Gestapo" to describe what kind of people hang around here reporting anything they don't like. That's the point. Not the namecalling. I had no intention of equating him with a Nazi. You're behaving like a real LIBERAL sissy. [I am not calling you one, though].
Maybe I should've used NKVD instead of Gestapo? Hm? Would that have been more appropriate? Or maybe OZNA? Or CIA?
I suppose the American media do not consider the Albanian terrorists as hostile forces - were on their side!
The same could be said regarding Republika Srpska. Just instead of Serbs, it would be "no Muslims in that part". How many could return to their homes?
