PETA Vehicle Collides With Deer, PETA to Sue State Game Agency

Group Goes After N.J. Fish and Wildlife Agencies for Expanding Deer Populations to Provide Living Targets for State Hunting Minority For Immediate Release: February 14, 2002 Contact: Matthew Penzer 757-622-7382 When a deer took out the entire front end of the car driven by two PETA anti-hunting campaigners, PETA saw red—and it wasn’t just the blood of the animal they believe was fleeing hunters’ guns. Today, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) faxed to Bob McDowell, director of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, and John Bradway, chairman of the Fish and Game Council, a notice of intent to sue them as a result of the collision late last November. PETA maintains that this accident—as well as thousands more that take place every year— was caused by the state’s mismanagement of the deer population, which includes purposely increasing herd sizes in order to provide more live targets for hunters and so jeopardizes the well-being of people who use the roads. In 1999 alone, there were more than 14,000 deer-vehicle collisions reported in New Jersey. PETA argues that by placing the interests of hunters, who amount to barely more than 1 percent of New Jersey’s population, above the safety of the more than 8 million New Jersey residents and countless out-of-state travelers who use the roads, wildlife agencies are violating the state’s constitutional mandate to provide protection and security to its people. PETA also opposes the fear, the disruption of herd members’ relationships, and the bloodshed suffered by the deer on grounds of cruelty to animals. "Motorists should be warned that New Jersey’s highways aren’t safe, thanks to wildlife management programs that put the amusement of hunters ahead of the safety of drivers," says PETA Legal Counsel Matthew Penzer, who hopes that this suit will encourage others. "New Jersey wildlife managers are creating dangerous conditions for both people and deer."

"When a deer took out the entire front end of the car driven by two PETA anti-hunting campaigners..."

They must've been driving an SUV, a pickup, or a big car. If they'd been driving a little gas-saving crunch buggy, they'd be dead as the deer right now. What would their Sierra Klub comrades say?

PETA is definitely crazy, but they are not the only ones. Here in NW Indiana, the battle rages on and on between those who want the deer herds culled because of the damage they do to residential plantings and those who think of all deer as Bambi. The DNR was talking about a birth control program for the deer, but I got so sick of the discussion, I don't even read the articles anymore.

In the meantime driving the more rural roads is a real hazard especially during rutting season.

Hey, I didn't say I was hunting "deer" at 1am. I'll leave it at that.

I grew up in NJ next to the Great Swamp. It's a natural swamp about 10 miles in diameter and surrounded by suburban sprawl. There were lot's of deer living in the swamp and hunting was used to keep the numbers down.

About 1970 it became a wildlife preserve in order to prevent it from becoming a huge airport serving New York City. A bunch of left wing nuts started running it there were huge fights over hunting. The deer population swelled. Lots of corporations built sprawling office complexes with lots of greenspace and ponds. The deer and the geese love it. My dad lost hundreds of dollars of plants and trees. I've almost been hit by deer twice. When I visited in the early 90's I would see a couple of dead deer along the side of the road each trip.

I remember they were trying a deer birth control plan a few years back. They tried mixing birth control medicine with feed. They couldn't get it to work. Different deer would get a different amount of feed and they couldn't find a birth control drug that would work.

They then demanded that the state hire enough workers to trap, radio collar and give a birth control drug to every female deer. It would have cost 100"s of millions of dollars. It was never implemented. Since my parents moved out 3 years ago I don't know what there doing now and don't care.

1:00 in the morning... Hmmmm... Hunting safety is a big issue these days, and although I'm not from Jersey, I would be willing to make a modest wager that hunting between sundown and sunup is prohibited in NJ because the hunter can't see what he's shooting at. (Absent night vision goggles, of course:-)

Nice post!

This PETA letter is real proof that the NJ Fish and Game People are not doing their job!

They need to increase the number of deer that hunters can legally kill and lengthen the season if more than 14,000 Deer/auto accidents are happening in a year.

This shows that there are just too many deer running around in NJ. More deer need to be killed by hunters on a yearly basis.

If that doesn't work, then bring in professional bounty hunters to shoot and kill deer with a bonus for each deer killed.

When the deer/auto accidents drop down to less than a dozen each year, the population is about right.

Besure to include does and fawns in the hunting quotas. Bambi and his mother must be shot and thinned out as well as the bucks.

If that doesn't work, we can send some of our mountain lions from Kali, Oregon and Washington to thin the herds. I have one in my neighborhood that I will send!

Last but not least everyone of these deer is a vector for lyme disease. The ticks who carry lyme disease thrive on these surburban deer.
