you got me, I don't know how those systems work, I just know I read in National Review an article and it said the soviets had the ability to 'trick' the plane into flying off-course. I guess NR is part of a big conspiracy to make people look stupid who read their magazine.

Chances are - THEY don't know what they hell they're writing - they just cite some other 'authority' who may or MAY NOT know what the hell he's writing.

Generally, I stay away from political newsmagazines like NR for accurate reporting of technical stuff. Just like I don't get my political opinions from technical journals.

I'm weird that way--I tend to make sure the guy knows what he's talking about before I pay him heed.
