Gotta agree with you here. Of course I'm one of those weirdos that think that a "pledge" should be voluntary, not compulsury. It reminds me too much of "1984" to have the state compel people to say they love the state. Love at gunpoint doesn't mean much, and all requirements of the state are ultimatly at gunpoint.
