Neighbour killed in row over football
Daily Telegraph(UK) ^ | 01/31/02 | Paul Stokes

A FIREMAN was stabbed to death by a neighbour during a dispute over children playing football at the side of a house, a court was told yesterday.

Andy Campbell, 40, died from a single wound to the heart from a kitchen knife pushed through a half-open door by Thomas Richardson.

Richardson told police that he, his wife and their two children had been driven mad by the constant thudding of a football against the gable end of their home in Selby, North Yorks.

York Crown Court was told that he had asked the youngsters involved to stop "countless times" and had been met with abuse.

His wife, Susan Richardson, told the jury: "Day in, day out and year in and year out there was a constant thud, thud, thud of a football hitting the wall.

"It went on into the night and we had become the goal posts for every Tom, Dick or Harry.

"Each time we complained the children replied with foul and abusive language and sang out, 'We shall not be moved'. The overall effect of the thumping football was to ruin our marriage. We are still married - just - legally."

Graham Hyland QC, prosecuting, said police were called following a confrontation with youngsters after the Richardsons returned from a Sunday afternoon out last August.

Later, as Richardson, 43, who works in the building trade, was walking his dog, he told noisy youngsters: "I have had enough of the kids around here."

Mr Hyland said: "There was an unseemly shouting match which resulted in the accused saying to Mr Campbell's daughter, Anna, 'Get your Dad'."

Anna's mother, Deborah, telephoned relatives, including her son from a previous marriage, James Collins, and he and others went to the Richardsons' house.

Mr Hyland said: "The defendant knew he had overstepped the mark by saying what he did to Anna. Jimmy Collins decided to take up the cudgel and was in an angry mood.

"Jimmy Collins was thumping the door and by this time Andy Campbell had become aware.

"He was concerned so he made his way to try to calm things down. That he became the victim makes it all the more tragic."

Mr Hyland said: "At some stage an arm lunged forward through the gap in the door which had been partly opened.

"Richardson had a knife in his hand and as he lunged, unhappily it went straight into the heart of Mr Campbell.

"There was only a single wound, but it caused massive internal damage. He was unable to avoid it, nor did he get any warning."

Richardson, who had been alone in the house with his daughter while his wife was at work, told police he felt threatened.

He said he had struggled to hold the door against the men as they shouted "Let's get him" or "Kill the bastard" and, in fear, thrust the knife three or four times through the gap they had managed to make. He asked officers what else he could have done.

Richardson denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

The hearing continues.

Of course if it weren't for the handgun ban in Britain, this wouldn't have happened. He could have just mown the kids down and had done with it.

Then again, if someone came to my door here in the USA with a butcher knife, I could (and would) blow him away and still get a good night's sleep. Sure glad we threw the Brits out way back when. Thank God for the 2nd Amendment.

The guy with the butcher knife was in the house. The dead guy was outside.

Don't worry, I was only joking about the handgun thing. I know how it winds some people up.

I see the English "knife culture" strikes again. When will they learn?

I suppose the Crown will be mandating plastic knives and forks for all.

Each time we complained the children replied with foul and abusive language and sang out, 'We shall not be moved'.

This is what comes from our 60's-style feminist socialist teachers filling their empty little pin heads with "self-esteem" and no knowledge. The kids think anything they want should be considered gospel.

Plastic spoons only.

I've read the article three times and I still don't understand why this guy is on trial. What am I missing?

Can I join you in being lost why he was charged? This is the most open shut self defense case that I have ever seen!

I've read it a few times myself and am wondering the same. Guy shows up with 'cudgel', and door is described as 'partially opened'.......I suspect that the door was not opened by Richardson.

In all fairness to the Brits, there are plenty of people here in the US who would like to institute the same on us.

Sounds like they showed up for the sole purpose of beating the h**l out of him, and were going to push their way into his house to do so...........it also sounds like Mr Richardson wasn't having any of that........

But what about the fact that he told the little girl to get her dad? Isn't that inviting the attacker? I could see open shut, but isn't there some responsibiliy on Richarsons part? (I am no lawyer. I am just asking.)

Piss poor reporting. "I have had enough of the kids around here."

That hardly seems enough to provoke mob action.

"The defendant knew he had overstepped the mark by saying what he did to Anna.

Facts, we need some facts. Tony, is there an equivalent to CourtTV in England?

I doubt that the man with the cudgel was invited, as well as 'other relatives'........what is so bad about saying 'get your Dad'........would you stand there and continue to argue with some snotnosed kid?........

"The guy with the butcher knife was in the house. The dead guy was outside."

Well, if the guy had had a 12 gauge pump shotgun instead of a knife he could have jacked in a round and I'm sure the people at his door would have noticed that. If I lived in Britain and I had a problem with neighborhood kids like this, and the police wouldn't do anything to help, I would have put up a chain-link fence and put a couple of Rottweillers in the yard. Let them try to get their ball back then. (You're right, some of us Yanks are a little touchy about the right to keep and bear arms.)
