Of course if it weren't for the handgun ban in Britain, this wouldn't have happened. He could have just mown the kids down and had done with it.

Then again, if someone came to my door here in the USA with a butcher knife, I could (and would) blow him away and still get a good night's sleep. Sure glad we threw the Brits out way back when. Thank God for the 2nd Amendment.

The guy with the butcher knife was
in the house. The dead guy was outside.
Don't worry, I was only joking about the handgun thing. I know how it winds some people up.

I see the English "knife culture" strikes again. When will they learn?
To: Arkle
I thought that they outlawed murder in the UK.

I suppose the Crown will be mandating plastic knives and forks for all.

Each time we complained the children replied with foul and abusive language and sang out, 'We shall not be moved'.
This is what comes from our 60's-style feminist socialist teachers filling their empty little pin heads with "self-esteem" and no knowledge. The kids think anything they want should be considered gospel.

I've read the article three times and I still don't understand why this guy is on trial. What am I missing?

Can I join you in being lost why he was charged? This is the most open shut self defense case that I have ever seen!

I've read it a few times myself and am wondering the same. Guy shows up with 'cudgel', and door is described as 'partially opened'.......I suspect that the door was not opened by Richardson.
In all fairness to the Brits, there are plenty of people here in the US who would like to institute the same on us.
To: Movemout
Sounds like they showed up for the sole purpose of beating the h**l out of him, and were going to push their way into his house to do so...........it also sounds like Mr Richardson wasn't having any of that........
To: Arkle
....decided to take up the cudgel .... Thought they had cudgel-control in Great Britain.

But what about the fact that he told the little girl to get her dad? Isn't that inviting the attacker? I could see open shut, but isn't there some responsibiliy on Richarsons part? (I am no lawyer. I am just asking.)

Piss poor reporting.
"I have had enough of the kids around here." That hardly seems enough to provoke mob action.
"The defendant knew he had overstepped the mark by saying what he did to Anna.
Facts, we need some facts. Tony, is there an equivalent to CourtTV in England?

Isn't that inviting the attacker?I doubt that the man with the cudgel was invited, as well as 'other relatives'........what is so bad about saying 'get your Dad'........would you stand there and continue to argue with some snotnosed kid?........

"The guy with the butcher knife was in the house. The dead guy was outside." Well, if the guy had had a 12 gauge pump shotgun instead of a knife he could have jacked in a round and I'm sure the people at his door would have noticed that. If I lived in Britain and I had a problem with neighborhood kids like this, and the police wouldn't do anything to help, I would have put up a chain-link fence and put a couple of Rottweillers in the yard. Let them try to get their ball back then. (You're right, some of us Yanks are a little touchy about the right to keep and bear arms.)
