Matthews and McCain will make out for a while, then they'll talk about the speech.

I think Chrissy aspires to have John's hair.

I'm convinced that there is more going on with McSally than we know. There are people jumping to conclude that she is a typical feminazi, but there are things that just don't add up with that picture:

She's being represented by a religious right, extremely socially conservative public interest legal foundation. Far more ideological than, say, Klayman. And you know that there are thousands of feminist law communes that would love to be handling this case.

A big part of her case is that the regulation is a violation of religious freedom. Many on the Left are worried about that, because it would strengthen the "free exercise" clause and provide precedents for religious groups that don't want to be forced to hire gay staff under equal employment laws, etc.

Immediately after she filed suit, five Republican Senators including Jesse Helms petitioned the DOD to drop the regulation.

I'm not entirely convinced that her employer is too upset with this lawsuit.

GW is smart like a fox. He knows what he is doing. Beating the Dems at their own game. Taking away their momentum. Many of these programs will not be the big government entitlements some thing. I expect programs will be consolidated, rates of growth set lower than expected. It will take time, but I believe GW is on the right path...

I fully agree with your last comment. Keep in mind, GWB discussed dignity several times tonight. We need to maintain dignity for our own ......... not illegal aliens.

This was his finest speech yet, IMHO. =^) It was awsome.

Agreed! The President gets better all the time.

Hmmm. I've never looked at this as a women's issue. She's a CO in the US Military. She knew what she was getting into when she raised her hand and took that oath and some of that was - sometimes you have to do things you find personally infringing.

Her primary mission is her military responsibilities. This other stuff is a distraction from that mission. And contrary to some, I am questioning if she followed her Chain of Command on this all the way. Some folks believe she did not and I remember seeing that posted someplace on FR...

I believe her military career is smoked at this point. Maybe not, but that is a hunch...

Looks like she just had another facelift; the cheeks are full, cherubic and rosy as they can be.

Run away! Run away!

Bingo! Plus, this could help close the "arousal gap" that the GOP tends to suffer.

He radiates confidence and sincerity and I can't think of a time our country needed it more.

Hey, Southflanknorthpawsis. I get the impression you like President Bush.

Me too!

And yes, MWR issues are also important, but not to the point of overshadowing why we are in SA. 1) Support and enforce no-fly zones 2) Provide a source of US presence in an area vital to US interests.

HLL....thank you for this thread tonight. I watched the entire speech, but couldn't participate because my tv is in the other room. I so much appreciate all the comments posted as the speech went along. Thank you all!

This was a great speech, except for about 10 minutes of laundry list stuff. However, I know they have to include that, because if they don't, the press will beat them up with the "no substance" criticism. So that was ok...and otherwise...great speech, inspiring, and W delivered!!

Glad to see Cheney there, glad to see the President so strong and forceful, glad to see Laura humble...all in all, wonderful people!

Thanks again for the thread!

This is the sum total of Bush's references to Islam as a religion in the speech (other references were to the Islamic countries, not the religion):

All fathers and mothers, in all societies, want their children to be educated, and live free from poverty and violence. No people on Earth yearn to be oppressed, or aspire to servitude, or eagerly await the midnight knock of the secret police.

If anyone doubts this, let them look to Afghanistan, where the Islamic "street" greeted the fall of tyranny with song and celebration. Let the skeptics look to Islam's own rich history, with its centuries of learning, and tolerance and progress. America will lead by defending liberty and justice because they are right and true and unchanging for all people everywhere. (Applause.)

As far as I can tell, this is a reference to Islam's past, which was sometimes better than its present. It was quite different from the "Islam means peace" business. I think some of the criticism from people like Dan Pipes that the President has no business setting up as an Islamic theologian has gotten through.

In context, he was not so much praising Islam as proclaiming the universality of the principles of liberty and justice - you know, those "self-evident truths". That is an appropriate job for the president. He was saying that these liberty and justice are relevant to all people, they aren't just western cultural constructs, and that means Muslims too, and if you doubt it, look at the celebration of the end of tyrrany in Kabul and look back at the best days of Islam.

In any event, I don't think that that one sentence constitutes "effervescent praise" of Islam. I don't believe it's possible, actually, to effervesce in one sentence.

I put on Peter Jennings after the speech just to see how Mr. Superiority would spin it....they cut to a fpcus group at U. of Tampa.

Jennings asked how many thought Bush's 80+ approval rating was deserved.....all 40 hands went up...unanimous. The he asks how many thought Bush didn't meet expectations in what he covered in the speech....NOT one hand was raised...even blacks like it.

Jennings was speechless...then he recovered enough to add....we'll be going to other areas of the country for reactions on future speeches.... I thought....where can you go to stack the focus group with anti-Bush RATs? Even NY loves Dubya now!

Hi RM. You've got me pegged...lol I love this man. Not since Ronaldus Maximus, have I felt such strong warmth from a president. I trust the man's heart and I believe that his intent is always right. I may differ on some minute point here or there but I don't expect perfection from anyone.

I can't imagine a better man to be in the White House at this time.
