It felt like one of those. (Yes, Southern Californians are earthquake aficionados.) Those always have a similar feeling here. More distant quakes don't have such a distinctive P-wave.

That might account for the initial quake, but what about the after shocks?Paula Poundstone and the kids?

Northridge was good enough to last me a lifetime. This is new and frightening to two of our cats and our dog. But we have one cat who was around during the Northridge quake, and was horribly traumatized by that quake (she went missing for a couple of days). Ever since then she's been easily spooked by sudden bangs and vibrations. She is really upset right now, and is hiding behind our bed and will probably be there for awhile.

If it rolls, where you're at, you probably aren't right on top of it (unless the focal depth is a ways down) but it is probably jarring people near the epicenter.

I listened to the show and started a thread. I think it was supposed to be about 10 days ago or so.

I lived in California for 22 years and never felt a big earthquake. Usually, by the time I realized what it was, it was over.
Stay safe.

^ btw, I've been feeling a lot of earthquakes around here lately.

Mr = 4.2 is not a "major earthquake." It is not even a "moderate" earthquake. This is a very typical Southern California earthqauke in our seismically active area of the globe. I haven't seen information on the focal mechanism yet, but I am going to wager it was primarilly a reverse slip quake with a small component of lateral slip.
The Richter magnitude (Mr) is a measurement of the energy relased during the quake. Since this scale is logrithmic, the larger the number, the more damaging the quake. There is another scale which measures "intensity." It is called the modified Mercalli scale, and is actually based on damage assessments. The Mercalli scale is usually denoted in Roman numerals, with a XII being worst, and an I being hardly felt. This quake will measure V or VI at best.

You can also go to www.kfwb.com and click on the earthquake link. We are still having smaller ones, I can feel the house rolling.

That's neat. Looks like there's bigger ones going on all over the place. Too bad my geography's so bad.
