Outrage--SNL Insults Christians, Pro-Lifers
Montag

Did anyone see the disturbing (and quite unfunny) "TV Funhouse" segment on SNL this evening?

They were attempting (one supposes) to insult Pat Robertson, but succeeded only in ridiculing Christians and those who value life and the unborn.

They portrayed a fictional Robertson-sponsored cartoon, in which "embyonic cell" and "Ted Trimester" (1st-trimester fetus) characters were placed in a work environment, as if they were high-powered workers. The characters were unintelligable, yet the other adult characters responded as if those two were geniuses. Also interspersed were a "Mr Parkinson" man seeking to kill the fetuses for their stem cells, who, upon being shown Jesus' image by the the "cell" character, ripped up a homosexual porno magazine (the "Robertson" scharacter asserts that if someone has a disease like Parkinsons it must be because Jesus is punishing them for being gay) and gives up his gun.

The message was clear: it is absurd to suppose that life begins at conception, because it is absurd to suppose that fetuses could function in the workplace. Also the piece asserts that one would have to be an extremist, homophobic Christian to value the unborn or have a problem with harvesting fetuses for stem cells.

Christianity is mocked and absurdly portrayed throughout the piece, which received very few laughs from the audience (do they really expect it to be funny?)

My wife and I were shocked by this, and the more we thought about it, the more disturbed we became.

Would you enlighten me on what Scriptures it says that life begins at conception?

Ive asked that question several times in the past week and all I received were insults. No one offered any proof. Good luck.

With all due respect to my friends who are dedicated to scripture, the idea that a human being is a living, biologically distinct entity is a scientific fact not dependent upon scriptural support. A human being acquires his or her complete DNA at the moment of conception. No sooner, no later.

Only the Church has the authority from God to correctly interpret Public Revelation. Try as you might to find a passage condemning counterfeiting, it's not there, but that doesn't mean that Christianity approves of counterfeiting. It just means that asking for a literalist translation does not cut the mustard, so to speak.

I haven't seen SNL for at least 2 years and happened to be over at a friend's house when the segment came on. My 3 friends are much more liberal than I am and even they were astounded and shocked at the "embryonic cell" cartoon. It was literally disgusting. They didn't miss any bases when insulting people and groups....UNBELIEVABLE.

I watched when it was Belushi, Aykroyd, Chase, Radner, Tomlin. i.e. when it was good. This show hasn't been good, ooooooh, for more than a decade.

It's been longer than that -- the period you recall was in the mid-Seventies.

While no one is forcing anyone to watch anything, broadcasters should not be allowed to broadcast their liberal propaganda when it assaults the sensitivities and sensibilities of religious.

So instead of not watching a T.V. show and supporting it and useing your cable box or V chip you want to force the world to not offend your views. Considering that fox has shown that a conservative news channel can compete and win in a free market why not just watch pro-life only cable networks. That will get the media bosses to pander to your views quicker then stomping your foot on the ground and holding your breath will. Just look at MSNBC (the most liberal of the cable news networks) trying out the Alan Keys show and if it works then expect more of the same programming.

Good one. I'm a pragmatist who leans towards conservative views. I think that the trash on the right smells just as bad as the trash on the left. The Greenies and the Pat Robertson crowd deserve each other. You'd think that people who complain about liberals being "politically correct" would have the same distain for political correctness on the right.

Pat Robertson is no longer pro-life anyway, right?

Only the Church has the authority from God to correctly interpret Public Revelation.

Which "Church" would that be, oh enlightened one? From your capitalization of the word, I and others here would assume you're referring to the RC, which would be insulting to the many brands of Protestantism found here.

Besides, at bottom, you know this is somehow the fault of us libertarians, you just haven't gotten around to mentioning it yet.

"broadcasters should not be allowed to broadcast their liberal propaganda when it assaults the sensitivities and sensibilities of religious."

And who would police the broadcasters? Much as I dislike liberals, and I've never watched SNL anyway, I believe it would be a violation of the First Amendment to interfere with broadcasting. It would be too much like book-burning.

I like to think I have a good sense of humor. There are many skits on SNL that make light of issues in favor of views other than my own - and I can still laugh at them or shrug them off. This, however, was well beyond the pail. It made me very uncomfortable. I do not care for Pat Roberson at all - but I found no humor in this skit whatsoever.

Robert Smigel is as left-wing as they get. He takes cheap shots at Carter and the Clintons, but they are for the purpose of appearing impartial; and they are quite mild compared to the heavy artillery he rolls out against the religious Right.

To those who dismiss this as just another puddle of mindless left-wing drivel, let me remind you that popular culture, as a whole, is a levee-breaking flood of mindless left-wing drivel. And it's been pouring down for 30 years.

He's no longer pro-life when it comes to aborting babies in China, apparently. Or, at least that would be the logical conclusion one would take by reading his comments from last year on the matter.

As for SNL, I never understood what was ever the big deal with that show. The skits are usually not funny at all and appear to be written by 10 year-olds on prozac. The one exception was the presidential debate skit from 2000 that had Gore accusing Bush of wanting to burn down some old lady's house. I almost didn't recover from the laughing fit that one threw me into.

Good morning. As a long time loyal fan of SNL, I agree with you and hardly watch it any more. Mostly because it isn't funny. Plus all my favorite comedians have a bad habit of dying, and it gets depressing after awhile.

I don't get offended easily and if I do, I turn the TV off. But SNL really blew it for my husband and I a few months ago when that Baldwin guy (the one who was suppose to leave the country but didn't) did that NPR skit about food. He was talking about his "Schweaty Balls" and now he had "Schweaty Wieners". He said, "Kids just loooove my Schweaty Wieners", and went on and on about kids loving his different "Schweaty" products.

I'm sorry, but that's entirely inappropriate humor, NOT funny at all. My husband and I were floored and could absolutely NOT believe what we just heard. We turned it off. Since then, we haven't watched it.

Don't anyone tell me to lighten up either. ROFL I'm as light as they come and LMBO at just about everything in life. I DO NOT laugh at sexual innuendoes that include children in the humor. If you are going to make a sex joke, ok, fine….whatever toots your horn…but LEAVE CHILDREN OUT OF IT. Disgusting!! There must be some NAMBLA members on the writing team.

I like watching old SNL on the Comedy Channel (back when it was funny).

What do you expect from the lost?...and have you been living under a rock or what, shocked, nothing that comes off tv should shock anyone anymore. If you are going to watch this kind of garbage, which BTW, only encourages more to be shown, you'd better expect to see this kind of stuff.

Most notable for the ommission of how many millions of brilliant & productive lives have been & are being thrown away, also for the lack of economic motivation in the 'industry', especially concerning the sale of body parts. Real humor is funny when it is true-this was only weak propaganda from evil people. Occasionally, they are capable of well-intended humor, only occasionally. We do watch the opening routine as a barometer of real public opinion-if our side is winning, SNL must tread more lightly, etc.
