Why Don't You Homeschool Your Kids? (Vanity)
Mensch | 1/23/02 | Mensch

Posted on 01/23/2002 7:52:29 PM PST by Mensch

Mrs. Mensch and I have been homeschooling our boys for going on seven years now. We pulled our eldest son out of second grade after his attending two years of public school. I won't bother you with our story, but I will tell you our results have been miraculous.

I Know all the reasons for homeschooling, but for the life of me, I don't understand why (except for ignorance) a married couple who loves their kids, won't homeschool them.

Homeschooling takes a lot of time and effort. My parents were poor and had to work very hard to support themselves. They didn't have multiple hours during the daytime(and sometimes nightime) to give me their own education.

My first take would be that some married couples are being throttled and cannot survive on a single income..

If/when I have children they will be either homeschooled or enrolled in the Parochial school where I attend. Our Parish's school only goes up to 8th grade, and I'll probably take over from there, with homeschooling. I'm a product of the public school system and I'll say it SUCKS. Peer pressure coupled with system pressure is a bad thing. My children will learn the fear of God and the goodness of family before they learn any fear of normalcy and so-called goodness of diversity.

1. Never thought of it. My kids are 31 and 18 now.

2. I was a failure in teaching them to clean their rooms.

3. My husband and I worked full time.

4. My kids couldn't wait to go to school and get away from us.

It's obvious why married parents don't homeschool their children. They are ignorant and hate their children.

I never thought that I would be a homeschool mom! I even went so far as to say that. We are now in our 10th year of homeschooling. We have many reasons to homeschool. We didn't think that we could do it either, but we have done well with the Lord's help. Many people think that you can't live on 1 income. We have made that choice and have stuck to it since our first child was born. (My hubby was just an E4 in the navy - 20 yrs ago and we were in Hawaii...not exactly a cheap place to live even in base housing.) Our family grew to 5--- we made it on E6 pay up until my husband retired from the navy. The money that we save in not having to buy school clothes more than pays for the books and computer programs.

fear?

of being unable to teach their children,
of being unable to discipline them enough to teach them,
of not having the patience and perseverence,
of sacrificing a standard of living built upon two incomes,
of giving up a self identity as a working professional and going back to being "just a housewife,"
of what others will think/say.

Denial?

Of the danger to their child's physical, emotional, and spiritual well being that government schooling poses.

Do you love your child?

Do you want them to get both the highest quality education and at least a fighting chance at surviving adolescence with their faith and morals intact?

Then homeschool them. Don't worry about the academics. I would rather raise a janitor that went to heaven than a rocket scientist that went to hell. Fortunately with homeschooling you can have your cake and eat it too. Excellent spiritual formation and academic formation both.

Stop thinking about it.

Just do it.

I was homeschooled thru all of grade school... I dont know if (should I ever have kids), whether I will homeschool or not. Good question.

I can see both sides of the discussion, since I did both.

Well, I guess it's because I'm such a bad parent.

Thanks for reminding me how ignorant I am also. I needed that!

What's even more obvious is your disconnection from reality.

Your answers please?

1 - Homeschooled children usually get their point of view from a limited number of instructors. This can result in a diminished perspective.

2 - Homeschooled children can be socially awkward or effeminate, due to less peer exposure than other children.

These are the typical and oft unproven and now disproven mantras of the government education establishment. Care to provide sources to prove your 2 points? (Anecdotal evidence is not proof.)

I Don't buy it. We are perpetually strapped, we could sorely use a second income. We set priorities, we do without. The kids are most important.

The study of literature, not to mention history, religion, philosophy, and so on, guarantees that children will be exposed to a wide range of points of view.

Homeschooled children don't get the opportunity to join the Trench Coat Mafia.

What's up with effeminate comment?
