In the late 1500s, the Spanish cruised the east coast of what later became America, and kidnapped American Indians, and sold thm into slavery in the caribbean... other instances of this occurred during the colonial period, as well, by the english, but not often, and usually only occurred during or after wars...
I think the reason the practice stopped was because those they took and enslaved died very quickly in captivity (possibly the climate differences played a part in this). So, they had to look elsewhere for more reliable slaves. ;0)
