How about a Freeper Postal Match?
Me | 01/10/2002 | NY.SS-Bar9

Posted on 01/10/2002 9:21:18 AM PST by NY.SS-Bar9

If you are not familiar with the term, "Postal" dosen't mean shooting up a post office. It is a means for shooters in different parts of the country to compete against each other in a contest of marksmanship.

Shooters are mailed numbered targets which they shoot, at agreed upon distances, times and calibers. The targets are returned via the mail (hence "postal") and scored. Obviously, the honor system comes into play here.

I think it would be interesting to do amongst ourselves. Any takers?

Went bird hunting yesterday (last weekend of quail season) and took pistols and did some practice.....I definitely need to quit coffee and caffiene a couple days before the shoot. Again, let me say;.......thanks for all your effort.

Why not use USRA targets and rules, as they were established for just this type of match? Also remember that many of us no longer have young eyes and need dot sights.

Milsurp. iron sights only .

Check out milsurpshooter.net 's postal match.

There will be 5 Divisions of competition, each subdivided into 3
                   Classes:

                   Divisions and Classes
Division One; C&R Bolt Action Rifles with Battle Sights of
                   original configuration.

Division Two; C&R Bolt Action Rifles with either Mojo or Target
                   sights.

Division Three; Military .22 Trainer Bolt Action Rifles with
                   original Iron Sights.

Division Four; Military .22 Trainer Bolt Action Rifles with
                   scopes.

Division Five; Semi-Auto Military Rifles with original Battle or
                   Match Sights.

Each Class will be awarded First through Fifth place. The Classes
will be divided in the following manner:

                   Division One, Two and Five:
                   Marksman; 4-6 inch groups
                   Sharpshooter; 2-4 inches
                   Expert; less than 2 inches

                   Divisions Three and Four:
                   Marksman; 3-5 inches
                   Sharpshooter; 1 1/2-3 inches
Expert; less than 1 1/2 inches

                   Rests
The only restriction regarding rests is that no gunvises are
allowed. Sandbags and/or simple rests are perfectly fine. Most
entrants will be firing from a shooting bench.

                   Ranges
Divisions One, Two and Five, 100 yards.
Divisions Three and Four, 50 yards.

                   Targets
Any paper target of your choice or design is allowed.

Each target will be shot at the appropriate yardage and
consist of a 5 shot group...no more, no less, or it will be
disqualified. Please don't circle the 5 shots you want scored out
of a larger grouping, that won't count.

Let me make this more clear.....each group must be 5 shots.
Multiple groups may be on the same target....but only 5 shot
groups will be scored. You may circle the group you want scored,
if there are numerous groups on the target. The thought here is
that you might be entering one target with groups from
different rifles that could be scored in different divisions or
classes, or submitting the best group of several fired from the
                   same rifle.

The overall spread of your entry will be scored, by measuring
center to center of the farthest two shots of the group
submitted and placed in the appropriate class.

There is no need to confine yourself to one rifle, you are free
to submit ONE group for each Division and Class. Only ONE
group from an individual rifle may be entered. Your results will
be scored and placed accordingly for each submission.

Each group sumbitted must contain the following information,
noted near the intended group: Your handle here, Model of
rifle, ammunition particulars and type of sight used.

Please enclose a note informing me where to return your target
to, should you want it back. No need to loose a bragging target
                   because of this.

                   Ammunition
Each entrant will fire whatever ammo they desire.

                   Rifle Configuration
All rifles will be in original configuration; no stock alterations,
free floating or glass bedding. Sight enhancments, as in white or
color on them is allowed, so that you may be able to see your
                   sights better.

This is an Honor System, please abide by all rules and regulations
to make this as fair a competition for everyone.

Cut off date for the match is December 30 or 31....whatever the
last day of the year is.

Well, that's about all I can think of now. Subject to editing, of
                   course.

I will provide a Post Office Box address soon so that you can send
them to me. Parallax has kindly allowed me to use the new logo
on the certificates and Papershooter has volunteered to design a
Framing Quality certificate for us to present.

Get to shooting everyone and let's make this a memorable event.
Should be plenty of joking and teasing when it is done. This is
surely going to be fun for all.

Thank you in advance for your participation. Looking forward to
getting lots and lots of targets to measure.

Thanks again for your interest and participation.

                   Steven

Sorry - We are full up.

We have 16 participants getting six targets each. (I started with 100)

Between the hassle of getting more targets and the additional cost and work, It is too much for now. If we do this again I will ping you.

Final Rules: (copy included with targets)

Rules and Directions:

You may fire as many practice rounds as you wish - just use other targets. When you are ready to fire "on the record":

Set your numbered target or targets out to 25 YARDS (75 Feet). You will be responsible for any "flyers" and other errant shots, including those of other shooters - place your targets accordingly.

Slow fire: Fire five rounds, reload, and fire the last five within twenty minutes on one target.

Timed fire and Rapid fire: It would help if you had an assistant to keep time.

Timed Fire: Fire five rounds within twenty seconds. Reload and fire five rounds within twenty seconds. All on same target.

Slow fire: Fire five rounds within ten seconds. Reload and fire five rounds within ten seconds. All on same target.

Each string of 5 shots must be completed within the allowed time. You may take as much time as you wish between 5 shot strings but all targets should be completed in one session.

Continue until you have completed six targets with ten rounds each (30 .22 rimfire / 30 centerfire).

Score your targets, but do not use scoring aids that may enlarge the hole. (I will use a .22 scoring pin)

Mark the following on the bottom of each target:

FR NICKNAME: SIGNATURE: DATE: CALIBER: SLOW/TIMED/RAPID (AS APPLICABLE) ESTIMATED SCORE:

Please reuse the mailing tubes. Targets should be postmarked by March 5th. Deadline may be extended in case of prolonged inclement weather. Freepmail me if you require more time.

Targets: NRA B-8 Timed/Rapid fire pistol targets.

Equipment: .22 caliber rimfire pistol and centerfire pistol of any caliber. Semi-auto or revolver. Open sights only - no optics, red-dots or lasers. Maximum sight radius 10". You must use the same pistol for all three sets of targets.

Distance: 25 yds. Indoor or outdoor.

Course of fire: 30 rounds with each pistol. Six targets / Ten shots each.

Time: 10 rounds fired within Twenty minutes / 5 rounds within 20 seconds (twice - same target) / and 5 rounds in 10 seconds. (twice - same target)

Position: Any standing freehand (no leaning on stationary objects) position, single or double-handed, is acceptable, wheelchair or other disabled persons may, of course, make the necessary modifications to this rule.

Scoring: If bullet hole (not secondary paper tears) touches ring, higher score is assigned. I will score all the targets and my decision will be final. In cases where a close call will decide placement, I will mail targets to another contestant for review.

Tiebreakers: Number of X-ring hits, then minimum overall group size.

Categories: Best overall score, Best rimfire, Best Centerfire, Smallest group.

Other Rules: Obey all local laws and shoot safely.

Prizes: The satisfaction of having your name (nicknames only, of course) and score posted on FR – along with the recognition (good or bad) that goes with it.

After the Freeper is finished shooting, I'd like them to post pictures with comments on firearms and the ammunition that was used. I'd love to see reloading data posted and if a custom shop built the gun.

One added note to the participants: Do not post any scores. Let NY.SS-Bar9 do that at the end. You don't want to discourage others from having some fun. The idea is to test yourself and don't worry about someone else's score. You're not shooting against someone. You're shooting WITH friends. If you come in last, think about it this way. Free Republic has 70,000 members. A "What handgun should I buy" Thread easily hits 300+ posts. You're one of 16 people with a couple of late arrivals who have the inclination to have someone post your scores for all the world to see. You're already in the top 18 who was willing to do this. You've already won.

Let me tell you here and now that I have no idea what my score will be. Whatever it is, so beit. My eyesight is poor and I use red dots/holosights for hunting but will abstain for this shoot. My advice to everyone is to quit caffeine prior to the shoot. In my experience, coffee/tea/cokes will be the biggest impediment.

Thanks. The time limit is plenty of time to shoot, even with unexpected delays. Wish my bosses could organize simple tasks as well as you organized this project that involves multiple personnel, addresses, timelines.

Most of my bosses couldn't organize a one car funeral, much less something like this

Now that it's snowing and freezing here in Texas, I'm sure the targets will be on my doorstep soon. I guess that evens out the contest. I'll take the cold over the heat on this. The arthitis locks my joints and I shoot better. I'll let you know when they arrive and when they're back in the mail for the return trip with an FR report on the shooting. I already have my loads made. I'm using once fired .45 brass with 6.0 grains of Win 231 and a Rucker's 185 grain semi-wadcutter. For the .22, I use Winchester Super X.

I went to the range two days ago and everyone should be very pleased. I'm still a bad shot.

I intend to use a stock Glock 19 for the centerfire. Old High Standard semi with 4" barrell for the .22.

Break a leg, everyone.
