Gov. Bush's opposition loves to portray him solely as a former real estate developer, and tries to convince voters he has done nothing positive to preserve FL's environment. And, that's simply not true. He is balancing both growth and preservation -- not an easy tightrope to walk, especially down here.Great comment. This thread should be sent to every major enviro. organization- Wilderness Society, Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, etc., so they can get out and use the Big Enviro $$$$ and influence to elect the person with the proven track record of protecting Florida's environment, Jeb Bush.
Thank God for FR and search engines. The truth is out there...and we, the little people, can find it ourselves.(^:

I am glad to see Gov. Bush's decision. I don't live anywhere near FL but have followed the Homestead Airport development story with some interest. Weren't there some significant Democratic contributors in the Miami area who stood to immensely benefit from some of the development proposals?

See post #71 on this thread for a link to an expose about that entire behind-the-scenes scenario....And, thank you, independentmind, for taking the time to post on this thread! :)

I get into a regular scrap with fellow conservatives because I consider myself an environmetalists (not a wacko) on certain issues, namely:
- Every river does NOT need a damn dam with a man-made lake behind it to provide taxpayer subsidized playgrounds to the outdoor recreation crowd and floods to those who live downriver when excess water is released during the spring thaw. I used to live downriver from such a dam. Old timers claimed they didn't know what a sandbag was before the dam was put in.
- There is more to transportation policy than pouring more concrete for highways and sending our soldiers overseas to fight for our right to cheap gas. No, I don't think Washington should force public transit on every burg with more than 50,000 people. Yes, I do beleive urban areas with legendary gridlock (LA, Houston, etc.) should encourage alternatives not only for the sake of those who can't drive cars, but for the sake of those who must who are stranded behind them due to the fact that (1)they shouldn't be driving, (2)their car is so old it breaks down frequently, (3)they work a fairly regular shift which could easily be served by public transit.
- I think public policies should be geared to reverse rural cleansing rather than support it. Some of your best environmentalists live on the land, rather than in some law office in New York or Portland.

Thank you so much for the link in #71. I used to follow Miami corruption in some detail; I have read many of DeFede's articles. I will make sure I take a look at his article on Homestead when I have a bit more time.

Very well written, summer. One of the most beneficial facits of FR is the ability to get a local perspective on important issues. Your essay was very enlightening.

My pleasure, independentmind. I just love it when fellow independents take a look at the issues. People like you and me reflect the kind of voter here in FL who will actually determine the outcome of the 2002 FL gov race. :)

EODGUY, thank you for being willing to read my essay. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. And I agree with your comments about the benefits of FR. In addition, this forum is truly a free press in itself, since one can create and publish here! Thanks again for making me smile today. :)
