'Granny' Busted For Pot Sales

A 72-year-old woman is one of three members of a Green Cove Springs family now in jail, accused of selling marijuana.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office arrested Elnora "Granny" Layfield, along with Michael and Linda Layfield, last Friday in their Stauffer Street home. Officer seized approximately 30 bags of marijuana valued at $1,200 from the house.

Police said that undercover officers bought marijuana at the home on four separate occasions prior to issuing a search warrant. When officers entered the home, the elder Layfield was found sitting in a living room with several bags of marijuana.

"It's unusual to find someone her age selling pot, but she's not the first and probably won't be the last," said Lt. Larry Thompson, who heads up the Clay County Drug Task Force, which co-ordinates the efforts of the sheriff's office, the Green Cove Springs and Orange Park police departments.

All three suspects were charged with possession, sale and delivery of marijuana over 20 grams, a felony with penalties of up to five years in jail upon conviction.

Elnora Layfield has two prior drug-related charges.

"Maybe a little jail time will send a stronger message to her -- because probation isn't working," Thompson said.

I'd rather not see any of you "heads' armed.

The way I look at it, either you can be trusted on the streets armed, or you should be confined to jail or a mental institution. The idea that there are people who can't be trusted with a gun, but who can be trusted not to try to obtain one, strikes me as wishful thinking. And it's also the rationalization for 'background checks' and other infringements on the RKBA.

Do you think it would be OK for a community's government to make an ordinance that everyone is required to carry, with provisions for a yearly tax on COs (to cover the extra policing costs that their selfish irresponsibility entails)? How about a law mandating that you produce a pistol when you go to vote?

The point I'm trying to get across is that being armed is rather like voting or jury duty, occasionally inconvenient but necessary for the preservation of a free state.

BTW, just a comment about your above itialicized passage. For someone(wienerdog.com) who claims he/she is not judgemental and that tenant is the center of his/her political/moral being, your above italicized passage sure contradicts that.

I can emapthize though, sometimes a person can get sucked up into a philosophy, that claims that it is not "judgemental", but in reality is the most judgemental. It is a trait called being human

I pick Carl Sagan. He probably stole the Thunderbird, gave your nephew a ride, bought pot from the grandma, and after being totally stoned, filmed a documentary about vast the amount of space that he discovered after God forgot to tell him not to smoke the tree.

After all if there was a junkie in the middle of the street shooting up(not bothering anybody, when he/she is shooting up) and the neighbor across the street calls the cops, isn't the bigger criminal in your mindset the neighbor who called the cops and not the junkie who is shooting up heroin in the middle of the street.

How does that pesky junkie keep showing up on this pot thread? Would he be more likely to ply his trade in front of your house if marijuana were legal? I have not voiced any opinions either way about whether it should be legal to inject heroin in front of your house. For the record, I don't see any problem with the other guy calling the police. Personally, I probably wouldn't handle it that way. I might be more inclined to see if I could offer the junkie some assistance. I might be able to assuage the situation without calling upon your Nanny State to do it at gunpoint.
