It's how they killed the F-111 in Vietnam. The 474th Fighter Wing was flying them in Operation Combat Lancer. They were using the Terrain Following Radar to stay low. The North Vietnamese figured out that if you fired chaff rockets along the flight path, the TFR saw a mountain and pulled up. After that, massed AA would open up in the area and do their damage.

3 F-111,s were lost during the "Lancer " opps..during "Linebacker 2" -9 F-111'S were lost..10 crew KIA.for 4000 combat missions. In 35 years only 13 F-111's have been lost..only I confirmed shot down..remainder were mid-air collission,flight into terrain..structural failure,and unknown....Pretty Impressive Girl!..info comes from the official F-111 web site.
