If he sticks to it by vetoing any bill that would raise taxes or repeal cuts, regardless of the consequences, this could be huge. It's not likely he's forgotten what happen to Bush 41. I suspect he will be able to keep this promise and therefor get a huge boost from it in 2004.

Yep he's dumb like a fox. If he capitulates like X41 then he's toast but I think this is a way to say I remember what happened to the agreement you had to do certain things if the taxes were raised and you didn't. But if he stays the course, then that's another matter.

The liberal talking-heads will doubtless be in titters over this for weeks, but in fact it is a perfectly normal expression. Lots of people say "Not over my dead body" - it is a more intense form of "Over my dead body," a colloquial ellipsis of "Not even over my dead body." In other words, I'll keep 'em from doing it even if they kill me, rather than "They'll have to kill me to do it."

This is like waving raw meat in front of a hungry lion. The Rats have a strong incentive to try and move openly for a tax increase now. If they do, Bush has them.

But, he does have the benefit of hindsight (re: his father's failure to maneuver carefully). He could simply demand spending cuts instead of tax increases! Wouldn't that be a refreshing change out of Washington!!!

Actually this Bush "over my dead body" statement reminds me more of NRA President Charleton Heston's now famous remark about taking his guns "from my cold, dead hands." Bush is a very effective leader and speaker and gets better all the time.

The key to this phrase was two-fold and that is why the english doesn't work well. The use of the word THEY and the positive tone.

The normal use of the phrase X isn't positive, its negative. This phrase was definately thought out in advance.

I even think there is a secondary thing about this that has yet to be commented on. The liberals can be divided between those who want a tax increase and those who don't. This phrase gives amunition to those who want a tax increase and can drive a wedge between the rat party.

The brilliance in this is just emerging.

One thing I've learned over the last year watching this President, is that he's not his father!! GW says what he means, and means what he says. I've really grown to like and respect this President. Every day, he makes me gladder that I voted for him. :)

What he really meant was "We have a better plan, WE will spend it for you. After all, you'd just waste it by expanding your businesses so you'd make more profits (of course we'll never admit that in order to make more profts you'd have to hire more workers) instead we'll subsidize buffalo herds, and increase wine tasting grants, and pay for better insurance for union people who already have better insurance then the rest of you.

GW looked totally at ease today. He's certainly better than Klintoon ever hoped to be; he's at ease, personable, and humorous. I didn't hear him bumble once. Truly a great statesman, IMO. Pretty good dig at DasHole, too. He should get a bump in the Hispanic community from his comments on Mexico and Fox, although I disagree with him on that front. Altogether a fine appearance by him.
