he darted out in front of a car on a busy two-lane road at the end of the cul-de-sac...I've been on a cul-de-sac or two and never have I been on one with a busy two-lane road at the end of it. This makes no sense. A busy 2 lane road on a cul-de-sac and more to the point at the end of it?

Someone told me on another thread that the "busy street" is actually about 1/4 of a mile from the cul-de-sac.

Only one end of the street ends in a cul-de-sac, the other end connects with N. New Bedford Road.(see below)
