Notre Dame to Hire Tyrone Willingham
ESPN Radio

It appears that Notre Dame has reached an agreement to hire Tyrone Willingham the coach of the Stanford Cardinal for the past seven years. Apparently, Willingham must meet with Notre Dame's selection committee today, but that the basic terms of a 6 year, approx $2 million deal have been reached.

Wilingham's record at Stanford was 44-36-1.....a worse winning percentage than that of recently fired head coach Bob Davie.

"Wilingham's record at Stanford was 44-36-1.....a worse winning percentage than that of recently fired head coach Bob Davie. But Davie lied about his academic and athletic background. That doesn't bother you? Are you saying that it doesn't matter that Davie lied so long as he does a good job coaching? Remember what Clinton's supporters said? They didn't care what he did in his personal life, as long as he did a good job as President.
To: itsinthebag
Davie wasn't the one who lied about his record. It was the first guy they hired to replace Davie.

Davie was fired for losing. O'Leary resigned after one week for lying.

My mistake. I wasn't on a tirade, I was simply asking questions. Sorry you were so offended. No harm meant.

Davie's replacement, George O'Leary from Georgia Tech, was the one who lied about his academic and athletic background. I'm not sure why Davie was fired.
This is the result of more extortion and blackmail from Jesse Jackson.

Thanks for clearing this up for me. Appreciate it.

Notre Dame will never get a Level One coach as long as they keep the lame ass AD they have. That is the reason no one will commit to them. The AD (Athletic Director) White, needs to be canned today. He is incompetent.

I think you'll be suprised with Willingham. I've always been impressed with him, besides the fact that he's Michigan State Alumni.
He has one of the toughest schools to recruit for because of academic standards, and outside of one or two really bad years, always does well in the PAC 10. He's been to the Rose Bowl. He has a top 10 team this year, and he doesn't get the players at a Stanford that a Washington, UCLA, or Oregon get.
I think he'll do very well at Notre Dame unfortunatly. I say unfortunatly, since we(Michigan State) play them all the time, and they are in our backyard as well recruiting.

Do you really think that Notre Dame gives two sh$ts what Jesse Jackson says? He tried the same thing when the Packers fired Ray Rhodes a few years ago and accomplished absolutely nothing.

Oh, and I forgot. Hiring Willingham is merely a political correctness move for ND. Jesse Jackson carped at them about hiring a "coach of color" (read black) and they caved in. He could possibly be a good coach but I don't know. They are going the route of Georgetown, Villanova and some of the other ultra-liberal Catholic schools. No joy in Domeville today.

All you have to know about White is that he was an Arizona State "scumdevil."

Georgetown, Villanova and some of the other ultra-liberal Catholic schools IS G'TOWN CATHOLIC? LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY.
To: Dan from Michigan
I agree, he'll be a great coach at ND. But, taking a moment to inject politics into this, it really burns my butt that the choice of Willingham will have the effect of making it look like Jesse Jackson got his way. Go Irish!
To: Cal Riptide
I guess instead of hiring a good, young coach, who has completely turned around a program very similar to Notre Dame they should hire some retread like Dick Vermeil, or as some of you have mentioned Lou Holtz. Willingham is a good coach who will do very well at Notre Dame. I think in a few years, you'll be quite happy.
To: GoreIsLove
How many Superbowls has Vermeil won? And who brought UCLA back to prominence? Oh.
To: GoreIsLove
I'd be willing to bet that Willingham will just turn out to be average. He might go 8-3 or 7-4 for a couple of seasons but thats it. Nothing more... He might be a great "organizer" but he definitely does not have that winning record people are talking about.
