The man suspected of trying to blow up a jet with explosives hidden in his shoes is under suicide watch and has been identified as a English national.
The man known as Richard C. Reid remains at the Plymouth House of County Correction in the US pending a psychological examination according to chief deputy Timothy Bane of the US Marshalls office.
Richard C. Reid is the name listed on his passport, which was issued on December 7 by the British embassy in Belgium and appears to be genuine.

The metal of the lighter might have set off the magnetometers at the security screening or if he put it in the tray he might have been given more scruteny for what he needed the lighter for (the terrorists assume that we are profiling and want to be as squeeky clean as possible to avoid as much additional attention as possible.)
I bet they profile smokers before they profile Middle Easterners.
