WASHINGTON (AP) -- A day before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a Lebanese man was convicted of conspiring to ship weapons acquired at Michigan gun shows to the terrorist organization Hezbollah.
The man was prohibited from buying guns because of a conviction for grand theft. But he did not have to undergo a background check because no federal or Michigan state law requires such checks for sales between private or unlicensed gun sellers and buyers at shows, according to a report released Wednesday by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Oh yeah, I'm sure Osama & company won't get any guns if we pass a couple of laws. Too bad we didn't have more laws that make flying planes into buildings harder before Sept. 11th. </sarcasm>

"For terrorists around the world, the United States is the great gun bazaar," said the report, which details how terrorists amass firearms in the United States."
In many of the Middle Eastern countries they sell fully automatic AKs in their own open-air Bazaars. Why would they need to come all the way to the United States for a semi-automatic version of the same gun?
To: Oldeconomybuyer
, the report called for stricter federal controls on guns, including requiring complete criminal background checks wherever a gun is sold I own guns. Requiring criminal background checks does NOT infringe upon my rights.

"For terrorists around the world, the United States is the great gun bazaar," said the report, which details how terrorists amass firearms in the United States. Right. Terrorists in the Middle East come thousands of miles to pay 5 - 10 times as much for weapons of lesser capability and pay large shipping/smuggling costs at great risk.
Bwaaa haaahaaahaaahaaahaaa!
And what are they carrying in every photo and video shot? Russian AK's. Full Auto Russian AK's. From...Russia. Cost? Typical blackmarket price in the Mid-East for a full-auto AK is between $50 and $100. Semi-auto AK bought in the U.S.? $700+.

I hear most of you blackpowder nutcases belong to militias and other radical organisations that support the Constitution. People who buy blackpowder should be held in camps until this war is over.

For terrorists around the world, the United States is the great gun bazaar Give me a break. What nonsense. Terrorists can get much better weapons elsewhere in the world. Why would they waste their time buying a silly semi-auto in the USA when from China, Sudan, Syria and dozens of other renegade states they can buy fully auto Kalishnikovs, grenades, Katyusha rockets and more. You think Al-Queda and Hamas and Hezbullah are wasting their time buying single shot, very expensive weapons here when so many cheap, powerful surplus automatic weapons can be had? This report is just plain old fear mongering.
Keep us alive, give us each a .45!

The report recommends . . . making permanent the federal ban on assault weapons. . . .Maybe someone can help me out here. Is the federal ban on "assault weapons" not permanent?
I thought I was knowledgable about gun laws, but this is news to me. Does anyone know when the ban is scheduled to expire?

I don't give a flying f*ck that criminals don't have the right to buy guns, jerk off. They gave up that right when they committed crimes.

Dan had said yesterday on another thread that background checks are required at gun shows, even when a purchase is made from a private party. Certainly this is true in California. A purchase made from a private party needs to go through a federally licensed dealer acting as a transfer agent, who does the background check. Could it be the Brady Bunch is lying?

Having a criminal background check is not the same thing as
Having to obtain government permission to excercise a "right" Got that, poopey-head?
