I doubt anyone at DU is capable of SPELLING Libertarianism, let alone discussing it...

We should send some WOD type FReepers over to explain that liberals and libertarians are the same thing. :-)

How do you justify calling Libertarians socially liberal while being anti-tax?

To me, a large, large portion of being 'socially liberal' includes government 'pork' that helps the disenfranchised become equal.

!?

Poor babies, I'm afraid they'll never get it. They would happy to make everyone poor, because we will never have a society where everyone is megawealthy.

Considering this thread, this is an excellent chance to make it clear why this libertarian is far more comfortable with the right than left. It's a simple thing: Personal respect.

I have argued politics with both the left and right and consistently the right has shown more respect and less anger about our points of disagreement. I have found that most conservatives judge me by how I act; most left-wingers judge me by what I believe in.

I have received far more personal intolerance and hate from the left than I have from the right. For example, time and again, I have had left-wingers -- including some I had been friends with -- wish that my children would be shot, because of my pro-gun stand. I have never had any Christian conservative wish AIDS or homosexual rape on my children, because of my pro-gay beliefs.

This is really basic, folks. The Conservatives, including the Fundamentalist religious right, and I disagree on many issues; but I have almost always received respect and a decently fair hearing from them. I have rarely received such consideration from the left.

I hope someone passes this along to DU. They need to hear it.

Thanks for the heads up. Seems to be orderly, without the catcalls.

re: 9

All I can say is agreed, and BUMP!

I bookmarked this thread based on that comment alone. Perhaps some discussion will develope rather than the thread falling apart after about the tenth post. That is always very disappointing.

"Tax the rich

Feed the poor

Until there are

No rich no more"

I thought that it was the most ignorant comment I'd ever heard the first time I encountered it. How long has it been now? Thirty years or more?

Still stupid.

"If you lurk too long at DU, you'll either grow hair on your palms or go blind."

Othr side effects include falling on the floor in uncontrollable fits of laughter, sometimes leading to incontinence. Also, friends may begin to beg you to get help before its too late. And if you register to post and say anything intelligent, you are guaranteed to be banned!

Wow, they've got a pretty interesting thread going. Liberal Classic is doing a great job of breaking the libertarian philosophy into little digestible chunks for the confused liberal minds over there.

Here's one choice of bit of confusion I witnessed while I was over there. It's from post #20 and the guy who posted it claims to be an anarcho-socialist -- a true oxymoron. Here it is:

Anarchists and Left Libertarians are against capitalism, we feel there is no need to ban the market though.

Flabbergasting, isn't it.

Unless you take it as critcism of leftist policies, then it's pretty funny. I doubt that's how it was meant, though.

I've experienced the same thing from Leftists.

Here's one classic example:

Before the last election I asked my sister-in-law, a card carrying Democrat and delegate to her state party convention, if she could point me to a good liberal newsletter or discussion group and provide me with a concise statement of her party's platform. Her only response was to send me a long email consisting entirely of George W. Bush jokes!
