[history]
Some whales have vestigial legs because their prehistoric ancestors were land mammals. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is a vestigial leg on whale-like Washington. The commission has no serious function, other than to illustrate how far things have evolved. Its head is a black woman, Mary Frances Berry, who, like many antebellum plantation owners and today's civil rights lobby, believes blacks cannot cope with life in predominantly white America, that they are comprehensively victimized and must be perpetual wards of paternalistic government.

George nailed her! I don't know if I'd go that far- (I doubt G.F.W. likes her type) but M.F. Berry is very typical of the insane, illogical, irrational left wing nut that youd find in any third world country. This whole council is a sham political bone thrown at the lefties that should be dissolved.
I'd be just as interested in knowing how great she thinks every thing is working out in Zimbabwe.
To: Pokey78
Oh that was great! She's not very bright, and it's my hope that President Bush disbands the Civil Rights Commission!!

She says that in the 1960s, the era of landmark civil rights legislation, blacks faced a "threat of genocide" that was "roughly comparable" to what Jews faced in Nazi Germany. 1960s, USA: Blacks granted complete and total equality in the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This is followed by the era of Affirmative Action, where Blacks are granted favored treatment over Whites in college admissions, hiring, and government contracts in an effort to redress years of unfavorable treatment.
1940s, Nazi Germany: Jews throughout Europe are rounded up and brought to concentration camps, where they are systematically murdered. Over six million are killed.
Yes, Ms. Berry, the parallels are frightening.

George nailed her! Does Clinton know?
To: grlfrnd
But if Bush dissolves the commission, Ms. Berry and her leftist friends will scream that the President has "dissolved" civil rights.

Well, she did say "roughly comparable" :)

Yes, but the GOP should now start working for Civil Rights for Gays and embrace the Log Cabin Republicans.

Today the civil rights lobby -- speaking of prehistoric vestiges -- continues to discuss blacks' problems in the anachronistic vocabulary of the civil rights movement. But the problems are mostly matters of social class. Consider: How much would the life chances of blacks in urban slums or rural poverty be improved if by the wave of a magic wand their skins were made white? Not much. This passage by Will is one of the more lucid things I've seen written about race/society in a long time.

It won't happen, but I would like to see Ms. Berry explain her actions, denied her racist surfeit, under oath to a real judge in a court of law televised live.

I would like to find that lists that the liberal Washington Monthly indicated the 5 democrats not to hire.

I have visited Free Republic many times over the last three months and thought I would join in the discussion.
To: log_cabin_gop_boy
And what are your views? Do you support President Bush? Do you support Attorney General Ashcroft?
To: log_cabin_gop_boy
I am not unsympathetic to some of the Log Cabin's goals. But I have been here a long time, and you will not be I suspect. Your screen name suggests that you are a troll. Maybe you are not, but given your first off topic post, that also is doubtful.

Does the civil rights commission deal with . . um. . . 'log cabin' issues? Or is that HUD?
