I am absolutely a pro-life "conservative a Christian." However, I was and am a BROKEN GLASS REPUBLICAN. Nothing short of sudden death or alien abduction would have kept me from voting for George Bush and AGAINST Al Gore last year--NOTHING!!! Any Christian staying home on any election day "in protest" in effect helps put more amoral-abortion-loving-leftist-socialists Godless Democrats in office. It's a STUPID, STUPID self defeating strategy of "win the battle, lose the war."

I don't agree with all of President Bush's policies, and I wish he WAS stronger in his pro-life stance. HOWEVER, I think he's a WONDERFUL president and I stand behind him 100%. I also thank God every day that lying, gutless woosy--man Al Gore is not Commander-In-Chief.

Your reply is heartening -- since it is simple good sense. Conservatives, and Christians in particular, need to stop acting as if they are some great majority just waiting to sweep the "just-right" person into office.

The dominant political faction in this country, the largest plurality, is leftism. It dominates our culture today, and the hard left is able - through environmentalism, through "the children", through entertainment, through celebrity, through media, and through "feel-your-pain" comfortable (meaning not too close to the ground) "support" for the "poor working people" -- pull along a solid plurality of the great mass of people who almost never think about or consider political issues.

Minority -- meaning out of the mainstream -- political positions, which is what conservatism is in this generation, need to find allies wherever they can and chip away at the support of the "establishment" position. This means that no particular faction in the minority position will get what it wants. Just to win an election, you are fighting a guerrila war against a more-powerful enemy. That means that all you can do is come together for the sole purpose of winning -- because enough victories strung together will start moving the ball down the field in your direction. You don't win one election and expect the whole world to change to your point of view -- even the Giant Reagan was unable to do that.

These people who claim that Bush would have won easily had be been more conservative are simply fooling themselves. For every vote Bush would have gained by being more conservative, he'd have lost one and a quarter votes on the more left side of the spectrum. There simply aren't enough conservatives to elect a President by themselves in this generation. Nader outpolled all of the far right candidates combined by an easy margin. And, apparently, Gore outpolled Bush overall by reaping huge (and maybe illegal in many cases) votes in inner-cities.

The plurality of opinion in our society, on a great host of issues that people vote on, is on the left. Hell, people now even think that good economies come only from high taxes! All of this sniping on the right about some candidate being not "quite" perfect enough for them is the extreme height of stupidity. The ONLY thing that matters in an election is winning it. And sitting out because a candidate has some particular position on a marginal issue simply ensures that you will never WIN, and your point of view will never receive any consideration in government decisions. And we'll all get to be very happy writing about how much we hate President Hillary.

(sorry for the long post, this kind of thing just sends me...)

AMEN!!! As I strolled through this thread, intending to post but at the moment too busy eating my salad, I now see no need as your words express the very sentiments in THIS evangelical fundamentalist Christian heart. :) Thanks.

I agree with you. Bush is not perfect, but there is no doubt that he was the best candidate. I think that many Christians did not vote in 2000 because of "uncertainty". Maybe they could see that George W. Bush sounded better, but they were not sure they could fully trust. As you know, often politicians promise many things but don't deliver. Bush seemed the best candidate, but was he actually the best?
Many people had doubts that prevented them to cast their votes.
However, since now for a while, Bush has been leading this country in the right direction, Christian people should have more confidence in Bush.
We also need to remember that among the Republican voters and leaders not everyone is as conservative as everyone else. Some are more conservative, some are less. Because of this, I understand that George W. Bush has tried (with some difficulties) to satisfy Republican voters and leaders of various shades and by doing that he lost some good voters in the process.
I believe that next time people vote for Bush, more Christians will vote for him.

Your post #23 is exactly what I would have said in response to this. But for Karl Rove to blame the election on "stay away" Christian Conservatives - that is beyond the pale! Someone needs to sit Mr. Rove down and explain a few things to him. But I will cool the anger I felt in response to reading this - something I am sure this post was designed to evoke.

There are many Republicans - many here - who think "Christian Consrevatives" are the cause of about every ill there is - both in the country and in the Republican party.

Here is the truth of the matter:

Were it not for Christian conservatives, this country would already have gone totally to hell in a handbasket. There are days you just want to pull up stakes, turn inward, and let the country do just that - go on to the hell that is awaiting us.

But we are called to be "light" and "salt" - and either we do that or we will also be worthy of nothing more than being tossed out and trampled underfoot.

What nearly cost President Bush the election was massive voter fraud - nothing else. If the Bush team and the Republicans do not focus like a laser beam on this problem ---ending election fraud - Republicans will lose in massive numbers in 2002 and he will lose in 2004, no matter what else happens.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Mr. Rove. And get some people active on ending voter fraud or kiss everything about this country that matters - bye bye.
