"There are eight journalists already dead," he said. "...This is a very dangerous place."

You know, I never thought I'd be defending Whorealdo, but here he's absolutely correct. And given that Peter Arnett disagrees with him, he's doubly correct.

Afghanistan is a very, very highly armed zone - you're not considered weird or unusual if you're armed, you're considered weird and unusual...and an attractive mark, when you're not.

Not only is it de rigeur to be armed in Afghanistan, but it is hypocritical to say that journalists can be surrounded by armed bodyguards but must not be armed. If I were the enemy, and I glass someone who is obviously so important that they travel under armed bodyguards, then that man becomes a target. Moreso than if I just saw some guy with a gun and a camera. It's certainly best if *most* journalists I can think of are unarmed...for all our sakes!

Me too Bill. I mean there are already 8 dead journalists. Do the Peter Arnetts of this world think the Al Queda or Taliban stopped and said "show me your press credentials" then let them go?? I don't think so.. dead is dead!! x8!!

As a Gun advocate, I think he has a right to defend himself. I know we'd feel the same way. Let me at least defend myself.

So (gosh, can't believe I'm even going to utter these words) Good for Geraldo!!!!

ouch,..that hurt!!!

Agreed, we seem to think the same way here. I don't know if anyone else here has been shot at or not but I have. I thank G*D that I haven't been hit yet or worse, like some of my PALS.

I will tell you one thing, if you are going to be in Afganistan, go armed as you will be dealt with very harshly if captured. This will be true whether you are a Journalist or not. It will also not matter if you are a woman or a child, do not plan on being captured there as dying outright will be much easier.

I have never been a fan of Geraldo, in fact I always dispised the Guy. I have to sat that I have a respect for him now. You have to respect someone for just being there in this mess.

Mr. Geraldo knows the rules and I'm sure that he knows that he tosses the Geneva convention rules out the window as they apply to him if he packs a weapon.
He can toss this protection if he pleases but I think he realizes the situation and that it is just retoric when bullets are flying at you.

Either way he is a dead man if shot in battle or as a civilian and these people do not care about him either way.
He is not an Islamic extremist and he will die for that reason if they get the opportunity to do it.
