400 Taliban supporters massacred in Kandahar: Prisoners die in containers

CHAMAN, Dec 11: Anti-Taliban tribal forces have launched a campaign to kill non-Afghan fighters in Kandahar and other parts of southern Afghanistan.

Reports said that over 400 non-Afghan Taliban fighters, mainly Arabs, had been trapped and massacred by tribal militias in and around Kandahar since the Taliban surrendered Kandahar, Hilmand and Zabul.

"A large number of dead bodies of Arab Taliban were found in various parts of Kandahar region," travellers reaching here from different parts of southern Afghanistan said. Tribal forces loyal to different warlords had killed them, they added.

"No tribal group is sparing the Arab Taliban," Amanullah, one of the witnesses, told newsmen near the border. People living in areas close to the Kandahar Airport had buried bodies of 21 Arab fighters the other day, he said, adding that they had been killed by the forces loyal to the governor of Kandahar.

Sources said that other tribal groups were also involved in the killing of non-Afghan Taliban. An uneasy calm prevailed in Kandahar city.

Intense fighting was reported for control of Lashkar Gah, capital of Hilmand.

In Spin Boldak, militiamen loyal to Wakil Abdul Samad and Akhtar Jan asked local people to surrender their weapons. They launched a campaign to deweaponize the area to restore peace. They warned that if people did not comply with the directive, they would raid their homes for recovery of arms and ammunition.

AFP adds: Dozens of Taliban who surrendered to the Northern Alliance died while being transported to a prison in sealed shipping containers, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The prisoners, many of them foreign fighters, died during the two to three-day journey from Kunduz to Shibarghan, Afghanistan, witnesses in Shibarghan told the daily.

On Saturday, Northern Alliance commander Colonel General Jurabek said 43 prisoners had died from injuries or asphyxiation in six containers, while three others died from wounds after their arrival in Shibarghan.

Several Pakistani prisoners, however, told the daily that many more people had died in the containers. One prisoner said all but seven people died from lack of air in his container, estimating the number dead at more than 100.

Another prisoner said 13 people died in his container and that the survivors had taken turns at breathing through a hole in the metal wall.

A local truck driver who spoke through acquaintances, said he saw soldiers unloading many bodies from a container outside the city.

The prisoners came from Kunduz, in northern Afghanistan, where a bloody uprising of captured Taliban fighters last month took US-led Afghan forces two weeks to put down, causing the death of some 230 prisoners and one US Central Intelligence Agency officer - the first US combat casualty of the Afghan campaign.

I think it means that they are killing each other.

I wonder if any of 'em were half eaten when discovered?

I have no sympathy for mercenaries. They knew what would happen if they were caught. They were just stupid enough to believe that a Korean War era army of poorly trained bullies could defeat the 21st century U.S. military.

The number of Good Taliban (see below) seems to be growing every day.

The only Good Indians I ever saw were dead Gen. Philip Sheridan, Ft. Union, Arkansas, 1869

Well, I am not sure if terrorists are killing THE terrorists, but you sure make a good point to keep in mind.

I believe it was Daniel Boone who said " I regret ever killing an Indian, they have treated me much better than the whites". This was a couple years after they had killed his brother. Seems like opinions vary.

Without having to comment on how I feel about the subject...
How do they distinguish the body of an Arab from a local?

No, it looks like the Northern Alliance is killing captured Taliban, with methods which are quite reminiscent of the Nazi's handling of 'detained' Jews.

With some people, anything that happens in the universe reminds them of Nazis and yada yada yada...
Has this become a populist shortcut for saying "I don't like or agree" with something?

This situation must surely cause us to reflect upon one of the great questions of our time; specifically, what is one to do with a dead taliban? Are there, say, 101 uses?

One could...

put them in fields to scare off birds...like scarecrows
place them upon roads to act as speedbumps...
use them as fill at construction sites...
use them as extras in "Return of the Night of the Living Dead...
use them as voters in any DemoNcrap precinct...(Ooops! Too close to the truth there!)
pose them as homeless so the media can complain about heartless Republicans....(Oops! Too close to the truth again!)

Nowwwwww I get what W meant! It's not a war against Islam! It's a war against ARABS!!!

Iraqis and Palestinians are Arabs, but Pashtuns and Uzbeks aren't from the Arabian Peninsula, so it's all consistent now.

I'll bet they wish they had the oppty to live the life of a Texas Deathrow inmate before their "detention" is over in shipping cartons...

That part is easy enough to grasp, but how do travelers coming through afterwards (and writing about it) know that?

Two points:

The Afghans are going after the "Arab" Taliban because these hated foreigners have been lording it over the native Afghans for years -- impressing their sons into military service, stealing their belongings, arresting their women for such hideous deeds as wearing nail polish, etc.

Any article in Pakistan's The Dawn newspaper should be viewed with considerable scepticism. I lived in Karachi for three years back in the late 1960's, and this paper was the only English-language daily available to us. This paper routinely quoted North Vietnamese and North Korean "news agencies" as "news" sources. Most articles began with the phrase "The imperialist Americans and their running dog lackeys ... ". 'Nuff said?
