Why Am I Logged In??? A Philosophical Discussion
under a rock in NJ. | Focault

Posted on 12/10/2001 12:29:00 PM PST by Focault's Pendulum

Why am I logged in??? Why are any of us logged in?

On August 22, 2001 I posed the question Am I Logged In??? It was a simple question. It was a question making no accusation, nor absolving blame. It was constructed to be an imperfect (why else ask the question) iambic pentameter haiku. It was a query posed to those with analytic acumen, ownership of a pocket calculator, and the decency of fellow human beings who have the courtesy to close their tags. I felt sure that in kind, the responses would come from engineers, construction project managers, and at least one guy I know who works under the NY subway fixing stuff!

The question I fear, was too linear, and after a fashion, as is my wont, found myself pondering the allegorical, rather than the literal. This is certainly not a quest I take on lightly. Surely there must be at least the semblance of an explanation. I do so with right minded heart. I will seek the answers that allude me. I will do this forthwright and soberly. Especially since I have to deny my favorite adult beverage...Johnnie Walker Red, as the current world situation conjures up too many unshaven images.

Somewhere, my good friends, the answer awaits. Until then I remain always, your good, faithful, (and prescription med deprived),Focault

P.S. A quote from Robert Bolt's play, A Man For All Seasons...."If you must make trouble, make the sort of trouble that's expected."

Now I have to go see a guy about a moose.

Funny, you don't look like you have a moose.

Oh! Philosophical Discussion! Now that's different!

Thank you. I've been trying to add depth.

If you ping in the woods and no one is around to hear it, is it still a ping?

Does a bear sh!t in the woods?

The realm of human cognizance construes and is defined by experiential observation.

(And that's about as far as I get with that.)

Philosophically speaking any discussion would breach protocol since this post really is not here, may I direct you to the original post for lively discussion.

If two plus two equals four, does to plus to equal for?

Do try to stay on track. This is a serious discussion. Your query would be more fitting in an existential discussion and is most likely rooted in your fear of keeping score while golfing.

To extend a more affable question closer to task you might try;

"If two plus two equals four, has the synergistic dynamic been accurately quantified? Please offer examples for discussion."

"...or not, and I am fine with that right now." - Richard Gere

As I do not golf, I have no fear of keeping score while not doing so. I am, however, somewhat disturbed at the notion of keeping score while playing Russian Roulette.

The question before us is:

Why am I logged in?

While it would seem to be a philosophhical pursuit, at the core is still the exestential "am I". "Why" and "logged in" are merely philosophical packaging. It's like imagining a dream, or a declarative query, or NetBios over TCP/IP. A cat in box still has claws, even if it does have air holes.

Mulder: Yes we do, don't we muffin?
Scully: Sure do, poopyhead.

My bad, since I do not golf either, it is painfully transparent that I perhaps am not fully prepared to address the question:

Why Am I Logged In?

Why else would I derail the subject by a hazardous interjection of your golfing acumen? Clearly I am a fraud and deserve the flames of existential rancor and distrust.

Perhaps the bigger question is "How am I logged in?" But again I digress... oh this is not working! Damned philosophical thread!!

BTW- The russian roulette score is "one". Better to quit while you have a head.

Scottie, I'm surprised at you. You're not usually this self-abusive. I'd suggest you get yourself a pot of coffe and a wooden mallet and go wading hip deep into the nastiest flame war you can find.

Good advise! When I find a good one, I will give you a bump.

Why am I logged in? 'cause finding a way out has never been a consideration!
