Survey finds 10 partners before marriage 'normal'

The majority of young people think it is normal for a person to have at least 10 sexual partners before marriage.

A survey has also found that three in 10 believe it is acceptable for a girl to lose her virginity before the age of 15.

Research carried out by Brook, the youth sex advisory service, says there is a "cultural change" in young people's attitudes towards sex.

Some 64% of men and 54% of women agreed that it was acceptable for a person to sleep with more than 10 partners before getting married.

But the survey, which questioned people aged 17 to 25, also showed that they wanted more information about sex and contraception.

Men admitted to getting most of their knowledge about contraception from TV and magazines, while women learned the most from magazines and their mothers.

Half of all the young women surveyed said they wished that teachers had supplied them with more information about preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Brook chief executive Jan Barlow said: "Young people have an increasing number of sexual partners and they are saying that's OK.

"But at the same time they don't have the information and access to services that they need.

"Young people must seek out advice and information in order to make their choices and to understand how to protect themselves both against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases."

Post 286. You are correct about the sexual practices of the young. It is getting worse all the time.

I used to believe the "sexual double standard" was unfair and a sign of the patriarchal construction of society. I wasn't thinking in the sense of a radical feminist, but thought that it was artificial.

Now, I've come to believe that the double standard is strictly speaking, part of our inherent composition. Too much scientific research has shown that there is a difference in how men and women view sex and infidelity. For women, it is emotional infidelity that is the greater crime, perhaps because it threatens to remove the presence of the male to "protect and provide" for their family. For men, it is about spreading our seed, and protecting our genetic lines, so we are more viscerally concerned with sexual infidelity.

As for why women who sleep around are viewed as sluts, and men "studs", the answer is simple skill-level involved. All things being equal, a woman can find willing sexual partners in a matter of moments. For a man, even for one night stands, he often has to maneuver and say all the right things. If the target of his affections is sober, the odds increase against his success;)

That doesn't mean I'm looking for virgins, just that there IS a NATURAL reason for the so-called "double standard." It's the same reason gay men so easily engage in promiscuous sex, there's no check against their impulses.

"I dont think a confident man cares how much sexual experience his partner has, as long as he will be the ultimate beneficiary of that experience."

Do you date hookers often?

Bella, stop with the ridiculous liberal ideology of premarital sex and cohabitation, both of which have been found to be damaging to the relationship, as well as the overall health of the family in society.

There's an old saying, "If you can get it for free, why buy it". This applies to what you are advocating. That is, if people are only looking for sex, why get married. However, that foolish belief is what actually prohibits a lot of good marriages from taking place. Furthermore, your idea of free, "experiemental love" is what destroys the substance of many relationships. Your ideas are flawed, and it has been proven time and time again that partners who do not engage in sex prior to marriage stand a MUCH better chance of standing the test of time. That is, they are more likely to have marriages that last a lifetime, which, if I remember correctly, is the purpose in the first place.

I have a feeling that you, as well as many others around here who advocate premarital sex, are saying so because of your own desires, and not about what is truly rational, nor logical.

Again, we have the Bible which is proven time after time. We have statistics which evidently show what is the correct path. Lastly, one should be able to use common sense in analyzing such a subject. Thus, I would think that you could visably see the damaging effects that a "free sex" attitude has on the family, children, and society as a whole.

I have always had this strange idea that GOOD sex had something to do with being in love with a person, but, hey, what do I know?

Or why buy the cow when the milk is free.

"Dr." Frank, what makes you think that men cannot rise about nature. To me, that is like saying that we have no role in our own destiny. It reeks with insanity, for the simple point being that one has to want to control themselves. I'm doing it, so I don't know why anyone else can't. I have no desire to have sex before marriage, yet I still get just as excited as the next guy when I see a beautiful woman. Thus, what's your point?

"Or why buy the cow when the milk is free."

The homogenized and pasteurized milk of today is not very good anyway. Real men want real milk.

"I am only responding to let you know that I will not again respond to such an assinine statement."

ummmm...where is that confidence? So you have a problem with women who have had a lot of sexual experience?

Most women don't.

Au contraire, partner. You do not know of what you speak.

In God's opinion it is not too late.

... and that's the whole issue here really. Do people believe in God and have enough faith in Him and His Word.

In general, at a societal level, strong families and the strength of the society is dependent upon it. At the micro-level the power of being pure at marriage with the one you love overcomes other considerations.

I was a virgin at 21 whne I married, my wife was a virgin and 22. We loved each other for who we were and what we were before ever having sex. Sex was not the point and cannot be the point (IMHO) of long term, healthy marriage. Don't get me wrong, it is a great experience and helps a relationship ... but if it is a principle purpose of the relationship then it can cause difficulties down the road and it can prevent a couple for loving one another for what they really are. With age, those issues become much more important.

We've had and raised five kids and taught them the same.

I am not attacking you here. People have to be free to make their own choices in these matters ... I am explaining my perspective and what I believe the traditional Christian perspective. Ultimately, choosing to not keep faith with those type of traditions will lead the nation to ruin IMHO ... in fact, it is doing so.

Tortoise, trust me, there are virgins out there. I'll agree, out in the humanistic world, they are largely overshadowed by the large numbers of non-virgins. However, one has to know where to look. Singles departments at most churches are the place to look. There you will find respectable, good-moraled women. I know because I associate with them. Likewise, a woman will likely find more principled, higher values, virgin men. I'm not going to say that everyone single in the church is a virgin, because I know that even many Christians have been sucked into society. However, overall, you'll find a much better selection.

"Dont confuse it with love, partner. Most women dont."

Oh, love has nothing to do with what you are talking about. We fully understand that. We have been discussing guys who just use women.
