Looks like AT&T was up to its eyebrows in the scheme to force Excite@Home into bankruptcy so they could pick up the company for peanuts (not that Excite isn't blameless!). Some way to treat your customers, is all I've got to say.

ATT owned 30 or 40 % of excite and stacked the board with their cronies. Welfare for lawyers for years to come. WHAT A COUNTRY

In my dealings with AT&T braodband, I can only say that it was a forgone conclusion that they would go bankrupt, it was just a matter of time. They have absolutely the worst customer service that any one could imagine. I could take pages to tell you the horror stories I had with them, but suffice to say, it was soooo bad that I am now a satellite internet user, and am much happier.

I'm back up on the AT&T network and things are actually peppier than they were on Excite. We are slightly faster on this system. The reporter for this article seems to have found a new disgruntled customers but I am very happy.

AT&T Broadband did not go bankrupt. Excite@Home went bankrupt. AT&T Broadband is doing very nicely, thank you for asking.

Well, I will grant you this: The customer service is pretty lame. They could spend a sheckel or two on that.

So far, top speed for me has been 138K down. Once I went all the way down to 16K! LOL. With Comcast I sometimes got 8Mbps. I'm going to give 'em another month or two to iron out their problems, then I'll have to leave.

Livermore, CA... Since the change to Attbi, my connection has been as slow as 86 kbps, and as high as 867 kbps. When I was on Att@home I would connect at 3 times that fast or better. Now AT&T says there will be a 1500 cap,(that is if they ever get their network up and running PROPERLY. They said that they are thinking of "TIERED" service? They will probably want to charge me a ton of more money to get the same connection that I used to get at the same price. Unless I get my speed up SOON, I'm off to DSL (Earthlink), I want my money's worth. I try to get in touch on the phone, I have a hour wait, so I got on to chat, guess what? there waw 1500 people in front of me. Great customer service, huh? I also have AT&T Cable and long distance and local calling. Guess what??? If they don't clear up this mess those will be gone from my home also....... AT&T ARE YOU LISTENING??? I'm sure I'm not the only one frustrated to this extent. Thanks for letting me vent!!

Must be regional. Give them some time.

Sounds like a good opportunity to allow free market competition take care of itself...

Unless I'm mistaken (and I'm not) cable is "deregulated"...or "deregulated" as defined by government regulations....

How many cable companies do you have to choose from in your "free market" and is service/access better at a cheaper price as promised?

just test my speed:

---------------------

test run: 19:38CST Dec 10, 2001
your IP*: 24.126.92.97
your ISP*: AT&T Broadband West

Your raw speed was 1767532.1 bits per second. There are 3 meaningful ways we can interpret this number:

Communications context

1.8
megabits per second This is how communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples of this context include 56k modem, 384/128 DSL, and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage context

215.8 kilobytes per second This is how data is measured on your hard drive and how FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download
4.7 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

I'm in San Ramon, CA. I also noticed the slowdown. I hadn't heard about them changing to a tiered service. That would be awful.

As one of the "stranded customers in Pennsylvania", I'd be happy to have service! Apparently after coming into our market and selling cable modems like mad, AT&T has decided it doesn't really want us as customers after all.

While their website says my service should be restored by 12/14, our local paper says they are trying to sell us to Adelphia - which if succesful would get us cable-modem service again maybe in January!

Dialup isn't too hot around here either. Ironic, considering one of the country's main fiber-optic trunk lines runs within a mile of my house. But, DSL isn't available here either, so I'll have to settle for whatever I can get...
