Fourteen of the 30 senators running for re-election next year voted against the pay raise. Two who will retire in January - Sens. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, and Strom Thurmond, R-S.C. - voted for the increase, while a third retiree - Jesse Helms, R-N.C. - did not vote. Thank God these dithering old fools are retiring. I'm voting for the Constitution Party in '02 and '04.

Feingold questioned the timing of a congressional pay boost when "our economy is in a recession and hundreds of thousands of workers have been laid off." He also noted that the string of four straight budget surpluses is now expected to end. . Never thought I'd agree with Feingold.
The rest of the country is sacrificing during this wartime. Why can't Congress?

Don't lie. It happened at 10pm. This is less than a cost of living increase. (YAWN) I suppose you would rather be governed by the likes of Hillary, Cantwell, Kennedy, Corzine and Rockefeller. The ones that don't need the pay. Pathetic.

Fascinating how people can get all hot and bothered by $500,000 and bills with pork provisions for tens of millions of dollars will go completely unnoticed.
At some point people need to grow up about the congressional salary issue. Doesn't look like it will ever happen. There are dentists making more than Senators.

Does anybody in the f***ing Congress ever read the Constitution? The 27th Amendment prohibits an immediate pay raise...there must be an election before it takes effect...so the voters can reject the selfish scum.

"After a debate that lasted five minutes late Friday night, the Senate used a 65-33 procedural vote to defeat an effort by Sens. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., to stop the increase from taking effect.""
Strategically engineered to permit the Liberal Dems to come away from this smelling quite clean; never mind the Dashole's running the show.
And that MISERABLE SOB Lott & just enough of his boys on the Right to swing this larceny simply went along for the ride.
...god am I ever sick to death of this kinda crap.

There you have it folks. Stealth legislooting.

This really angers me. People are out of work and the ones that are employed are really worried about being fired next. How can they just give themselves a pay raise. They disgust me. They should set an example and refuse a pay raise.

personally, i would like to see pay linked to performance. how about a law that says senators only get a raise when they had a balanced budget four years in a row, and deal with critical legislation as outlined by the president?

I still don't understand, how, after all this time, we still allow them to vote for their own pay raises. IT MAKES NOT SENSE.

I'm surprised that Senator Warner voted Nay too. I guess that the senators can afford to have lobster and prime rib every night now... ha ha ha

Sorry but I don't get excited about pay raises for our representatives or, for that matter, our President. A 5k raise is peanuts.
RalphieBoy Nader made a big stink about this a few years ago. It's a Nader-type issue and he and his supporters are welcome to it.

Members of Congress should be well paid. Otherwise the trend towards only the independently wealthy serving will accelerate. This bashing of pay raises is a cheap populist shot in my opinion.
