Colin Powell visits Uzbekistan

TASHKENT, Dec 07, 2001 (Itar-Tass via COMTEX) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's working visit to Uzbekistan is to begin on Saturday with talks at the republic's foreign ministry. He is to arrive here on Friday evening. This is Powell's first visit to Uzbekistan.

He is to discuss with his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov some problems of cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries. The American guest is to be be received on Saturday morning by Uzbek President Islam Karimov. According to an official source, they are to review the situation in Afghanistan and to discuss the documents on the future state pattern of Afghanistan, which were approved in Bonn.

The Uzbek president and the U.S. Secretary of State are also expected to discuss ways to combat international terrorism and to guarantee Central Asia's security, and also the situation in the world community.

In addition to this, Karimov and Powell are to discuss some other problems of mutual concern, and, of course, their talk is to focus on the prospects of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United States in different areas, it was learned from the above-said source.
