Produced by Gus Dudgeon with superb string arrangements by Paul Buckmaster it contained some of his finest moments. This duo provided superior production as well as arrangements throughout Elton's career.

I'm glad you mentioned them. I must confess, I always enjoyed their production and arrangement efforts.

Buckmaster did the arrangements for "Friends" too, and I thought he adapted Elton John's songs and caught the mood of that little-known film about as perfectly as a soundtrack could. Neither the film nor the soundtrack was a sonic grand novel by any means. Rather, they were more like one of James Joyce's short-stories from "Dubliners": understated epiphanies perfectly fitted to their context.

If Elton John's retirement is anything like Garth Brooks' retirement, Elton is going to be very busy from now on.

I remember going to see the Rolling Stones at the Fox Theater in Atlant in 1982. It was touted as their last tour.

I think Sir Elton just needs some publicity.

I always thought Wacko Jacko should order the plastic surgeon who gave him that nose to wear one like it himself for a week to see how it feels...

I've begun to think that perhaps a sign that I am aging is that I am old enough to remember Michael Jackson when he was still black. (Not to mention, when he could still make good music...)

To explain the musical mind of Elton John to anyone who does not "appreciate" music, is much like convincing a Welfare recipient the government is lying to them.

Convincing a welfare recipient the government is lying to them has what to do with the point that there just might be those among us who - while acknowledging certainly his right to the fruits of his musical labours, since a market certainly did exist for them - happen to find Elton John a musical snooze, as I have found him for the most part?

The Goodbye Yellow Brick Road LP is a flat-out masterpiece, whether it's creator is a butt-pirate or not. I'll survive, as will Elton, who'll actually be on his knees again in no time! Badda-boom. I couldn't resist.

I celebrate mine every Friday in my chat club.

For regular followers of my travails...we hit 80 members in three weeks but we were getting three times as many hits from lurkers who never registered. But went there just to be offended.

One of them probably saw a rude word on the message board (as you can imagine, Duke, there are a few well-meaning idiots who might type something inappropriate on a board or guestbook) and kindly informed Yahoo who in turn deleted the club.

The New Daily Roast Chat Club is now MEMBERS ONLY. Anyone who accesses The Daily Roast Homepage and clicks 'Members Only' will be barred from admission! That will really p*ss them off!!!

I have sent out 20 new invitations...and received 19 members instantly.

Back to the topic: I agree that Michael Jackson's work was better during the four or so years that he was a black man.

Since I am now at work on my own first book, I should certainly hope there may be a market for it. Even as I should acknowledge that, whomever might like it, not everyone will, and for their own reasons either way. That's the market, baby. And that is just fine with me.

But until I complete and publish my work, any market therefore simply cannot be known to exist. (And, if you please, I should prefer that such a market not be invented by those incompetent to manage such things - like the government, for example; no NEA or NEH or any of that thievery for me, thank you very much.) Likewise, until Elton John produced his own music for the first time on his own terms and under his own name and guidance, any market for that music simply could not have been predicted.

Sir Elton retracts his retirement announcement

Elton John has a recording future after all.

The 54-year-old made news earlier this week when he said his current album, ``Songs From the West Coast,'' would be his last.

But Tuesday he told radio host Ryan Seacrest that he was ``just having a bad day'' when he announced his retirement. ``I love playing so much,'' he said. ``I'll probably make another record.''
