[[[ Excite@Home HAS gone dark !!! ]]] -- CableModem customers stranded!
12/01/2001 | Lazamataz

Posted on 12/01/2001 5:52:05 AM PST by Lazamataz

I'm an @home customer, AT&T to be exact. At 8:15 CST, I no longer could access any pages. Not google.com, not cnn.com, none of the old standbys that ALWAYS work.

I've heard a lot about the poaaibility of @Home pulling the plug on 4.1 million customers. Did it happen? The only reason I can connect at all is that my lovely and gracious fiance also has a dialup account for when she is on the road, and I am calling in here using that. I am presently on hold on the AT&T@Home help line. I'll have more information.

Technically, the light is on but no pages are being connected. My Cable Modem is up and connected but nothing loads.

This is some pretty absurd chit. In todays modern economy, you DON'T JUST CUT THE LINES on people!!!

Jeez, you didnt see this coming? How long does it take to get a dialup connection? Half hour tops?

Some of you sound like spoiled brats. Watch cable news on your TV set, listen to over the air radio, give up napster and its clones for a week and you will do just fine.

Yes this gentleman is right up their with Osama in my book. The economic damage this could cause might be in a class with the WTC. So much for the recovery.

When AT&T called the guy said our broadband might not be back until next week or so.And i've gotten so used to broadband i like it more than aol.

Dial-up is the worst i can't stand it. On the phone he said our service is interrupted.

Where are the socialists when you need them.

You have a job, so that leaves you out.

There are volumes of data that are transferred that is just too much for dial up connection speeds. I was transferring 96 Meg files last night.

hehehe... I'm on dialup and always have been. I get to play with T1's at the office, but out here in the sticks where I live I'm lucky to have indoor plumbing-- I won't see broadband for a long time.

I actually don't miss it. I do just fine with v.90. I can multilink two modems when I need a little quicker connect, but most of the time I don't bother.

To all those re-entering the dialup world: Come on in... the water's fine. :-)

Hey Laz, why do you think they call it the 'bleeding edge'.

  1. Usually, its the technology, and not the USER, who is doing the bleeding.

  2. This ain't bleeding edge. I had cable modems back in mid 1999.

Well, if AT&T follows thru with what I was told, the Denver area will be back up withing a couple of hours.

Provided, of course, you define 267 as 'a couple'.

Dial-up is the worst i can't stand it.

hehehe... these kids today... [chuckle]

My first modem was 300bps. I remember chatting on the bbs's thinking it was just pretty darn cool. Of course, then 14.4 compression came out and it was a flippin miracle. Seems I got a lot of work done then too. :-)

Everything will be all right.

There is no cause for alarm.

Evely-budy to get from street...

There is nothing to fear but fear itself...

[chuckle chuckle]
