On tonight's Special Report with Brit Hume, (hosted by Jim Angle this evening), at the close of the show when they normally have some funny video clip, they showed President Bush and the First Lady on their way to Marine One to leave for Camp David for the weekend. Jim said "You will see the president notice something unusual on his way to Marine One".
As the video starts, the First Lady is leading the way into the helicopter with the spaniel dog on the leash, and the president is right behind her with the Scotty on the leash.
As the First Lady entered the chopper, the Marine at the gangway saluted and held his salute. The scottie the president was walking decided it wanted to squat right when he got to steps. The president pulled on its' leash, but the stubborn scottie persisted in squatting. The president bent down and scooped up the pooch and entered Marine One. After he entered the Marine cut his salute and returned to the position of attention.
Moments later the president reemerged from the helicopter and out onto the steps. The Marine was standing at attention, head and eyes straight ahead. The president leaned over and tapped him on the left arm. The startled Marine turned his body toward the president and received his returned salute!
I was so impressed by this true act of respect for our military people by our president! He really does get it. Most any other person of his staure would have just continued his journey, disregarding the neglected return salute. Not George W. Bush. He is earning the respect of the military community, not expecting it - as most would.

I saw that, but missed the beginning. I was wondering what was going on, and I thought he forgot to salute and came back. I smiled and thought, this is truly respectful. What a great President we have!!!

I worked with GWB in 1972 in Alabama, as a county director in a small, insignificant SW Alabama county for the Blount for Senate campaign. He always made me feel as important as the other Directors from more populous counties AND ALWAYS RETURNED MY CALLS. Always a gentleman and a pleasure to work with(for).

I saw that this morning. I was loving it. He made sure Laura and those adorable doggies were safe in the plane then he came back to salute the Marine. Fantastic!!

"They don't look into a crowd, they look at the people." Thanks for that story, HLL.
The longer these people are in the White House the more I love them.
Thank you, dear sweet Lord, for our President and our First Lady.

Thanks for telling that story. No sarcasm intended, as you doubtless know.

FYI - The news channel of AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service) rebroadcasts the big newscasts from all the major networks. I just checked their schedule - it looks like their news channel does rebroadcast Special Report with Brit Hume, so a fair number of people in our military have the chance to see it!

One of my life long friends got to meet GW when GW was first elected to governor. My friend said the same things that you just posted about GW! In fact it was a discussion with him in May of 2000 that brought me over to GW's side!
Both of you are right target with this wonderful man.

Good old AFRTS I sure the Marines in the field will know they have a real Command-In-Chief and not a Command-In-Chump!!!

We used to kid about "wall breaking" jack russels, but loved them too much. They are the greatest. Nice too find a jr lover here, but not a big surprise given our "diversity". hehehe

I have been so happy with my Dish system and Fox News. I will never go back.

Anyone who flew the high performance "lead sleds" on any consistent basis back then was at considerable risk. I felt safer as a Marine in Tet than I would have in those planes when landing.

This gesture by the president has really touched me deep inside. It really shows how much he cares, even when no one is looking.I can't recall who said it, but I have the following quote tacked to my wall. Character is doing what's right when no one is looking. Seems to apply to our Prez!
