The American Red Cross ran up a white flag recently, surrendering to critics who had accused it of bait-and-switch fund raising by planning to hold back more than half of the $543 million it had raised for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. Officials pledged that just about all of the money (minus $49 million for overhead) would go to the victims for whom it had been given. Red Cross president Bernadine Healy had already resigned from her $450,010 position, but not before suffering a tongue-lashing from Rep. Bart Stupak (D., Mich.). Reporting that some of his constituents had driven to New York City to give the Red Cross a check, Mr. Stupak said, "They expected that check to be used now, not two years from now."

Is this true? Do you know any other reason why a man would work as hard as John Busby does for $13,000 a year and room and board?
Do you know any other reason why Mother Theresa would forgo all material comforts to sit with the sick and untouchable in Bombay?
Do you know any other reason why people will give up everything they have to help another?
I'm sure there are atheists who do good things for little or no reward. The fact that I haven't met them doesn't prove anything. But the overarching historical reason that men have given up everything to help others has been their faith in G-d and a relationship with Him that surpasses everything this world has to offer.

Years ago, I used to donate to Save the Children, until I read that their head made $200,000 a year.
This was the item that really stood out for me. The difference between organizations such as Red Cross and United Way vs. Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, etc.; is the difference between making a career choice and choosing a vocation.
I have posted previously on this forum that my husband, some years ago, worked with a guy who had previously worked at United Way. He quit and told my hubby that he would never donate to them. He saw first hand the fraud and abuse that went on with the money. Taking care of the upper administration people is what United Way does first with the money donated.
Even more importantly, they appear to be soundly led by people of G-d.

I went to a Christian college and the Salvation Army used to recruit on our campus for Christmas kettle workers. The quarter system was set up so we'd have 6 weeks off and it was a great Christmas job (yeah, some of the kettle workers are paid positions - mostly in the larger cities). So for five weeks I stood on a street corner in the Bronx for 12 hours a day.
I had literally dozens of veterans come up and tell me they liked the Salvation Army but would never give a dime to the Red Cross. One even told me that during the war, the Red Cross would charge for paper and pencil for a soldier to write a letter to home. He said the Army never charged for anything.
What is a public license to BEG and how do I get one.
When I drive by those people with the "Will Work for Food" signs can I ask to see their license?
I'll grant your accountability point once the public officials become accountable to the public again.

To the contrary, faith is exactly what motivates the Salvation Army.
But their approach is the correct one. You cannot feed the hunger in a man's soul if he still hungers in his belly.
My father was a fireman for the city of Chicago for 40 years. He says that when they were out in the winter trying to put out fires, the Salvation Army would show up with hot coffee and some food. He says he never saw the Red Cross.
I believe I won't, either. Thanks for the bump. The Red Cross and United Way have long been off my donation list for the very reasons for which they are now finally being publicly criticized.

The Salvation Army continues to provide emergency relief services to those struggling with the double blow of Tropical Storm Lee and the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Some areas along the Northeast coast were hit with both storms. Continued flooding and a serious lack of resources have made living conditions extremely difficult for those in the impacted areas.
Within the last two weeks, The Salvation Army has served more than 515,000 meals, snacks and drinks to victims and emergency responders along the East Coast, using 76 emergency response vehicles.

The Salvation Army is feeding at ten Red Cross shelters and has deployed six canteens to assist.
In Vermont:
The Salvation Army is providing meals in the areas of Rutland and Waterbury.
In New York:
The Salvation Army is still feeding evacuees and emergency responders from mobile canteens in various New York towns such as Schenectady, Margaretville, Fleischmanns, Binghamton, Nichols and Sydney.
Salvation Army personnel are stationed at three Disaster Assistance Centers in Delaware, Schenectady and Schoharie counties. Centers are in operation from 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
In Amsterdam, a feeding support is set up at the Montgomery County shelter. In Schenectady, a shelter is provided at the Schenectady High School.
In Massachusetts:
The Salvation Army deployed emergency relief teams to the areas of New Bedford, Attleboro and Metro Boston to provide food, drinks and clean-up kits.
