Advantage: God - Why the Salvation Army beats the Red Cross

The American Red Cross ran up a white flag recently, surrendering to critics who had accused it of bait-and-switch fund raising by planning to hold back more than half of the $543 million it had raised for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. Officials pledged that just about all of the money (minus $49 million for overhead) would go to the victims for whom it had been given. Red Cross president Bernadine Healy had already resigned from her $450,010 position, but not before suffering a tongue-lashing from Rep. Bart Stupak (D., Mich.). Reporting that some of his constituents had driven to New York City to give the Red Cross a check, Mr. Stupak said, "They expected that check to be used now, not two years from now."

Religion is irrelevant.

Is this true? Do you know any other reason why a man would work as hard as John Busby does for $13,000 a year and room and board?

Do you know any other reason why Mother Theresa would forgo all material comforts to sit with the sick and untouchable in Bombay?

Do you know any other reason why people will give up everything they have to help another?

I'm sure there are atheists who do good things for little or no reward. The fact that I haven't met them doesn't prove anything. But the overarching historical reason that men have given up everything to help others has been their faith in G-d and a relationship with Him that surpasses everything this world has to offer.

Shalom.

Red Crescent? Like in Islam? You betcha!

Don't forget that there is no 'Red Star of David' because the Muslims won't let the Jews in.

In our area, I know the local SA district leader must listen to a police/fire scanner. I can't tell you the number of times I've been on a fire scene, and had the SA pull up with their canteen truck(without us calling), and give out hotdogs, breakfast sandwiches, coffee, gatorade, etc. They usually hang out until it's over, then quietly pack up and go on their way. Never charging for their services, and humbly accepting our thanks for the job they do.

Quite a difference from the Red Cross.

After 9-11, I donated online to the Salvation Army, because I was convinced that my contribution would be put to maximum use. After reading these posts, I'm glad to hear that it's so. And it's great news that the head guy at SA makes only $13,000 a year. They put the money to helping people, not toward bureaucratic salaries.

Years ago, I used to donate to Save the Children, until I read that their head made $200,000 a year.

While the Red Cross practiced organizational damage control over the past month, several reporters noted that the Salvation Army pays its top executive, John Busby, $13,000 a year, plus frugal room, board and transportation expenses.

This was the item that really stood out for me. The difference between organizations such as Red Cross and United Way vs. Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, etc.; is the difference between making a career choice and choosing a vocation.

I have posted previously on this forum that my husband, some years ago, worked with a guy who had previously worked at United Way. He quit and told my hubby that he would never donate to them. He saw first hand the fraud and abuse that went on with the money. Taking care of the upper administration people is what United Way does first with the money donated.

bump

Maybe you could post the latest on how the Salvation Army national organization brought to heel their Western group of thirteen states because the California leadership was ready to implement "domestic partner" benefits in order to comply with San Francisco's contractual demands to all contracting organizations.

It looks to me like the Salvation Army is still soundly led according to Biblical principles. They are far more deserving of donations than United Way or Red Cross. Just compare the salaries and perks. The leader of Salvation Army lives in what most people would consider poverty. And he is glad to serve the Lord humbly. I'm glad the Salvation Army still provides a sound example of Christian charity and conduct.

-I must add that for any Congressman to be speaking to any private group about its finances is hypocrisy of the first order-- Any organization with a public license to BEG is accountible to public officials.

Even more importantly, they appear to be soundly led by people of G-d.

Like that man you're named after.

I won't walk so fast past the pots with the bell ringers this christmas.

I went to a Christian college and the Salvation Army used to recruit on our campus for Christmas kettle workers. The quarter system was set up so we'd have 6 weeks off and it was a great Christmas job (yeah, some of the kettle workers are paid positions - mostly in the larger cities). So for five weeks I stood on a street corner in the Bronx for 12 hours a day.

I had literally dozens of veterans come up and tell me they liked the Salvation Army but would never give a dime to the Red Cross. One even told me that during the war, the Red Cross would charge for paper and pencil for a soldier to write a letter to home. He said the Army never charged for anything.

What is a public license to BEG and how do I get one.

When I drive by those people with the "Will Work for Food" signs can I ask to see their license?

I'll grant your accountability point once the public officials become accountable to the public again.

Shalom.

Religion is irrelevant.

To the contrary, faith is exactly what motivates the Salvation Army.

But their approach is the correct one. You cannot feed the hunger in a man's soul if he still hungers in his belly.

I agree with this writer.

My father was a fireman for the city of Chicago for 40 years. He says that when they were out in the winter trying to put out fires, the Salvation Army would show up with hot coffee and some food. He says he never saw the Red Cross.

The very best thing to do is to give the money directly to those in need or to your church to give to the folks who need it. This way you can track it and make sure it goes exactly where you want it to go. If the church will not allow you to track it then you need to go to another church. Big organizations like the red cross et al. need some of the money to support themselves and their goals (Which may not be your goal) I try to give more directly and I believe it is more efficient. I give it to the church and they write a check to who I say. This makes it an anonymous donation on my part. If I do not care about the recipient knowing who I am then I give it directly to them.

I believe I won't, either. Thanks for the bump. The Red Cross and United Way have long been off my donation list for the very reasons for which they are now finally being publicly criticized.

Red Cross v. Salvation Army?

DONATE TO THE SALVATION ARMY... TODAY!!!
https://donate.salvationarmyusa.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=206

Thought this would be a good time to bring up this old thread.

Here are some SA blog quotes from last year...
NOTE that SA was serving at ten RED CROSS SHELTERS!

*****
The Salvation Army continues to provide emergency relief services to those struggling with the double blow of Tropical Storm Lee and the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Some areas along the Northeast coast were hit with both storms. Continued flooding and a serious lack of resources have made living conditions extremely difficult for those in the impacted areas.

Within the last two weeks, The Salvation Army has served more than 515,000 meals, snacks and drinks to victims and emergency responders along the East Coast, using 76 emergency response vehicles.
“Tropical Storm Lee and Hurricane Irene did a one – two punch, severely increasing the need in flood impacted northeastern states. Nevertheless, The Salvation Army is there, serving and providing relief services to all community members in need”, said Major George Hood Community Relations & Development Secretary.

Here are the most recent updates:

In Pennsylvania:
The Salvation Army is feeding at ten Red Cross shelters and has deployed six canteens to assist.

In Vermont:
The Salvation Army is providing meals in the areas of Rutland and Waterbury.

In New York:
The Salvation Army is still feeding evacuees and emergency responders from mobile canteens in various New York towns such as Schenectady, Margaretville, Fleischmanns, Binghamton, Nichols and Sydney.
Salvation Army personnel are stationed at three Disaster Assistance Centers in Delaware, Schenectady and Schoharie counties. Centers are in operation from 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
In Amsterdam, a feeding support is set up at the Montgomery County shelter. In Schenectady, a shelter is provided at the Schenectady High School.

In Massachusetts:
The Salvation Army deployed emergency relief teams to the areas of New Bedford, Attleboro and Metro Boston to provide food, drinks and clean-up kits.

The best way that you can help us provide is to donate monetarily. Donations can be made online by visiting www.SalvationArmyUSA.org.
You can also text the word ‘STORM’ to 80888 to make a $10 donation through your cell phone.

Checks should be designated “2011 Hurricane Season” and can be sent to:
Disaster Gift Processing Center
