Dating a professor----What Perfume?
Myself

Posted on 11/24/2001 11:14:14 AM PST by Lighthouse Lady

Please, if you don't want to answer or don't like the post: don't read it. I don't know where else to ask this without feeling foolish (though I do anyway). I am going to go out for the first time in a long while. I divorced 6 years ago. Went out a few times and decided it was a waste of time. Now, I met someone with whom I have a lot in common. Went with my daughter to get some perfume whatever you call it these days... WOW, selection was tremendous. Overload for me. So, you men out there: I like Lavender but do not want to remind him of his mother, for heavens sake and the pumpkin pie thing is too ridiculous.(the smell most men like...) So, help me out here.. what are your favorites?

I know I will probably resent this.

Precisely why I'm avoiding it . .

How about...none!

What men find most attractive is confidence. Not arrogance or cockiness (!), but the self-assurance to calmly know what to do and know what you want.

My husband likes Obsession and Escape, by Calvin Klein. Other posts are correct when they say no matter what fragrance, use it in moderation.

I'd say soap and shampoo, or anything that smells like food.

And remember to have fun. :)

Channel #5 is a safe bet. Just don't overdo it.

BTW, good luck. Hope you have a pleasant evening.

The only reason why I am answering your question is that I am an academic myself - probably there is a common taste among academics :-)).

Anyway, my wife uses "Angel" by Thierry Mugler. It's very sweet though and may not fit your character well, you'll have to decide this. And don't use too much of it, it's quite strong.

Men are so different as to what they prefer..... Some like vanilla-based, some more flowery, some like the old favorites: Shalimar, Chanel #5, etc. I've often had men approach me and ask what I was wearing. Wear a scent that makes you comfortable - but not too much! Have fun! CC :)

Welcome to FR, LL and relax and have fun on your date. As for perfume - they stopped making my favorite years ago, so I suggest a nice shower gel (I like plumeria) and don't add anything to it. Simple and subtle.

P.S. If you really want to know if this is a serious potential - go see his home/apartment. If he's living like a pig - forget it. If he's fastidious and keeps a cleaner house than you do - forget it. The one's who keep a reasonably decent house are well-balanced and fun.

Believe it or not, one day I was taken with the smell of this really great new perfume my wife was wearing. I asked her what it was, and she said she wasn't wearing any.

Further investigation revealed that what I was actually smelling was her Dr. Scholl's foot deodorant spray. Now I make her put it behind her ears.

Wear no perfume. This will be a talking point.

When he says to you "I've noticed that you are free of scent that is not your own," you have the opportunity to say "How nice of you to notice! Do you like it?"

You take it from there.

Well, at last a subject that I can address with authority! A friend works in market research. Most men don't know the name of the perfume, but they respond positively (!) to the same scents again and again. You don't say how old your professor is, and that does make a difference. Here goes.

Shalimar (all ages - little boys of 10 and 'mature' men as well); Joy; Chanel (No. 5 only). Others that tested well: Escada, Oscar de la Renta; Paul Sebastian.

Some that did NOT test well: Obsession and Opium. Most men did not like the Estee Lauder scents; most women did. Most 'English' scents do not test well - too strong. Lavender falls into that category.

I wear Fracas most of the time. People stop me in the street to ask what I'm wearing. A little bit goes a long way. Sort of hard to find in stores, but lots of internet sites have it. I also wear Patou's 1000 (same people who make Joy - not quite as strong - it's expensive but a little bit goes a LONG way).

My favorite: Rive Gauche (St. Laurent). Good for daytime or business.

Have fun!

A Professor and a Freeper, wow, who would have thought. Have fun. My present wife was single for 11 years between her first marriage and ours. Still going strong after 10 years. I'm no help when it comes to perfume. A bit of advice, go to DU and get a couple of code words to slip in your conversation. This is just to make sure that he is not a sceret plant.

Try Jessica McClintock and let me know what you think. Thats my favorite and wear it all the time. Very feminine and floral.
