November 24, 2001 -- Is Harry Potter the spawn of Satan?
That's the opinion at one Christian school in southern Australia, where parents voted yesterday to forbid students from reading about the bespectacled wizard and his preteen cohorts.
The vote was just part of a widespread anti-Harry backlash by religious conservatives angered by the best-selling books' blatant celebration of witchcraft and the occult.

Actually Appy, I know we are far removed from the original article, but in it there is this passage:
The American Library Association says there have been attempts in at least 13 states to ban the book from schools and public libraries.
So, the idea of "boogeymen" is not that far-fetched. There are people who want to ban the book. There was also an incident in Pittsburgh last year(?) in which a local church held a book burning in which the HP series held center stage.
Tony it would be nice if his activity was all that visible.....those that you fought were kids once..did ya ever wonder what was put in their mind to allow such evil to take control?
Just because someone has cancer you do not ignore a ruptured appendex....satan fights on many levels tailoring his work to the population...in this country..greed,the desire to be in control ,rebellion..and pride...
Evil with different faces
You paint with as broad a brush as you accuse other of doing.
Who has said NO one should be allowed to read Potter? I expect the unsaved to read that and much more..
Who has said that anyone was going to hell for reading Potter? Who has defended 'pulp fiction' ? Who has tormented others? Did you report them to the authorities?
You just make this up as you go along..slandering happily as you go
Born again believers will understand that it is not good or right or in the will of God for them to give place to this in their lives.......so they will dismiss the book..and the movie for what it is.
The rest of you are more than welcome to fill your tank with satan and his works..and smile and find escape where you will. this is America.
I just have sympathy for children who have parents that can not see the potential spiritual harm they do there kids..we will raise a generation of card readers ....and occult lovers, instead of lovers of God.
On 9/11 people kept saying God couldn't have caused this because we are a "Christian " nation. No ,we are in a post Christian era now. We have given God our answer to 9/11...Harry Potter
WoodKirk, in England we associate woods with evil and witch craft and as for Kirk, it is an old Scottish pagan name.
The word Kirk is the name for church. It is a (celtic)phonetical representation of the word church.('ch' has a 'k' sound.. kinda.)
The interpretation you speak of (that being pagan) is not Scottish at all, rather the reverse. etymologicaly speaking it is a chicken egg thing, Kirk = Church. The name was also atributed to the godess Circe who was supposedly a godess of truth and is represented by a circle.
I find that incredibly funny, because if you take the cirlce around just a bit the word church was derived from a pagan goddess. The irony astounds me, was perchance the pagan god of irony named congregation? If Church is pagan then is Harry Potter a christian?
Have you read the Bible? You might want to add it to your reading list..before they are taken away
How many of those schools have Bibles in them..seems you a selected interest in book banning...
You're missing the reason we point to people's great deeds, because they are the crux of the question. I don't know which of the Christian sects you belong to but for the sake of this discussion let's assume/pretend it's anything but Catholic, and that like many non-Catholic Christian's you think the Catholic Church has lost it's way and can no longer truly be considered a Christian church representing the teachings of Jesus and His Holy Father. So, if all that is true, if being baptised and confirmed into Catholicism is not the path to salvation, and if the goodly deeds you do while in the mortal coil only have meaning if you have followed the proper path to salvation, then Mother Theresa, who was easily the single most charitable kind and loving person ever to walk the face of the earth (got a little wierd in her last few years, happens when you get really old) is burning in ever lasting hell because she bent knee to the wrong version of God.
And if you think that's how things should work you've got problems. And if God make things work that way He can count me out for the duration because I'd rather burn in hell with Mother Theresa than bend knee to a callous uncaring diety with an attitude problem even once. To me hell on earth is hypocrisy, and if there really is a God and he really has made things such that the most important deed is where you bend knee (which is, quite frankly, one of the least significant deeds you can perform during your day) I cannot in clean conscience say "this God is omnibenevolent and should be worshipped and His blessings should be sought".
To me it's no simple accident that the majority of the religions that have ever existed (notice I said majority, there are exceptions, as there are exceptions to everything) have basically the same moral system. They push for honor of our word, respect to our betters, don't murder, don't steal, help the less fortunate. To me if there is a God this was quite deliberate, He seeded this planet with the same message all over the place (remember, until very recently where you were born was where you would die and it was very unlikely you would ever be exposed to a different culture) because He wanted us to get the message and follow the message and He wouldn't care if you bend knee or what name of His you bend knee too. Because the ultimate form of bending the knee is to live by the message.
At least, that's the only version of God I would ever be able to respect, much less worship.
On 9/11 people said allot of crazy things, oddly on 11/27 people still do. Per that quote some fools said God 'Couldn't'. Must be nice to be able to judge what God can and cant do, then decide why.
I for one do not think it particularly wise to judge God or how he views our actions. If the supposition that it(9/11) was a question looking for a reply maybe the answer he see's is how quickly his name is taken in vain.
Are you concerned about this..or only books on witchcraft that will expand your child mind?
The people on this thread taking you to task for not reading posts are right, you don't, otherwise you would have seen that I posted that in response to a question about whether or not people wanted to ban HP. The question had nothing to do with the Bible.
Interesting it is mostly..Catholics that have no problem with witchcraft..
So who do you hate more, witches or Catholics?
You.
Born again believers will understand that it is not good or right or in the will of God for them to give place to this in their lives.......so they will dismiss the book..and the movie for what it is.
In other words, you're saying that, I cannot really be a "born again believer" because I've read Harry Potter and allow my children to read/see Harry Potter and have not dismissed the book.
Harry Potter is not a threat to my faith, or that of my family.
