November 24, 2001 -- Is Harry Potter the spawn of Satan?

That's the opinion at one Christian school in southern Australia, where parents voted yesterday to forbid students from reading about the bespectacled wizard and his preteen cohorts.

The vote was just part of a widespread anti-Harry backlash by religious conservatives angered by the best-selling books' blatant celebration of witchcraft and the occult.

Your a bully under the guise of Christianity. Shame on you.. I will pray harder tonight for you, than any others on this thread. Leave NoPardons alone. Leave all of us who dare to disagree with you alone. I feel nothing,.. NOTHING but hypocritical judgmental hateful feelings coming from you. In the words of an old hippie saying I once heard "Wheres the love man?"..... Now,. I KNOW from watching you respond to people for the last couple days that you won't read or tried to understand anything I said in this post, any more than you READ or TRIED TO UNDERSTAND anything I said in my last posts. You didn't even read my response where I DID SAY HOW I READ THE BIBLE AND IN FACT WHICH ONES, TO MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. *******TO ALL.. CLOSED MIND ALERT******** DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO TALK TO RNMOMOF7. She already knows it all.. Sad .. really sad.

You are right I have a closed mind..and you know what I am not ashamed of it. My mind is closed to Satan, and his works and his words..You think there is some superior morality in allowing satan to have a free hand with "professing Christians" applauding him..promoting his work and arguing his case..LOL

Does that make you morally superior in the eyes of God ,or in the eyes of man? Just a little holier than thou huh? Seems that comes in mant forms!

You may not believe in ghosts and goblins (demons)...but Jesus did..so I assume that means there are other portions of scripture you do not like...so far we have witchcraft and demons..

That is a dangerous slope you know, because pretty soon the resurection may become an issue..

Just quoting scripture, doesn't mean that one understands it ( a parrot can do that, but does the grace of GOD engulf the parrot, who repeats, unthinkingly, HIS words ? ) , nor that that person lives according to HIS laws and will. Look at what those who held the witch trials ( there were many. many more here, than just in Salem , Mass. ! ) here , did in HIS name. The same thing is being done to the HP series and movie AND to the author. As I have repeatedly said, bearing false witness is breaking one of GOD's own Commandments. This is what riles me, to a great extent.

Well you need to go back and read the story of Joseph one more time. Reading the bible doesnt make you a Christian

Until someone can give me a spell that can magically clean up my house while I sit by my computer posting on FR, I will not believe any such cr@p. If you think witchcraft is real, please offer some proof.

I'll go one better. I'll personally kick in $1,000 to the 1 million dollar prize offered by James Randi to "anyone who can show, under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event."

Your post just reminded me of the tv show "Bewitched". I think there was a bunch of hoopla over that at one time too. I remember trying to twitch my nose and make things happen. Never did!!! :o)

Hey, I wish it did too! Could you imagine the money you could make cleaning houses? We could also just turn Bin Laden into a hairy toad and be done with him! We could all ride brooms and not be dependent of foreign oil. The possibilities are endless. The only problem is that these mysterious powers don't exist. If they did, all the talk shows would be booking witches and their acts. Did you see how the food magically appeared in the Harry Potter movie? That sure would be cool after a long, hard day at work. And, the dished get cleaned up afterwards!?!??! Forgeddaboudit! Do owls carry Anthrax? I don't think they do. What do you know, witchcraft solved another of the country's problems! Maybe the anti-Harry crowd does have something to worry about! [/rant]

13 years of religious school, K through 12, one thing I learned is that I don't decide who is a christian, who is a sinner, and who is gonna be saved,

Ya prove calvinism...

"He says that those who judge will not only be judged as they judge others.. but judged HARSH(er), HARDER than they judge!! "

Pardon me for jumping in here, but I have to point something out. There's plenty of 'judging' coming from the pro-Potter side on these threads. The anti-Potter people have been called lunatics, fanatics, idiots, closed-minded, etc etc. I think you yourself insinuated they were not true Christians in your opinion. That's a bit judgemental, don't you think?

Let's not act all sweet and innocent, there's been judging coming from all sides. ;-)

IMO there shouldn't even be an argument if you're a Christian. These books glorify and glamorize witchcraft and sorcery. Is that a good thing or not?

Like I said before, if you're not a Christian, then you're probably thinking, "who cares... its a good read!". But if you are a Christian, why would you want to support something that glamorizes those practices that are clearly condemned?

Well, why hasn't anyone won the prize yet? I am told that spells and such are real, so why has no one come forward. Wait, I'm sorry. Silly question. They make their money by flicking their wands. That's why no one ever sees witches and stuff. They don't need to be out in the workplace with us "Muggles".

I was (and on occassion still am) an avid reader of the Bible (there's good stuff and helpful advice in the bible regardless of your faith, hence why I still read it). What made me curious enough to check occultist stuff was that I couldn't figure out what these people were talking about; I'd played all this D&D and listened to all this heavy metal and yet knew nothing about the occult had no urge to perform any kind of ritual or any of that silly crap. But here were these people that were sharing my faith saying this was the inevitable out come, so I felt like I must be missing something, so I started reading the real "bad" books (and letme tell you those books are bad, as in lame, LeVey's Satanic Bible is hands down the funniest thing I've ever read, and I'm pretty sure the humor was not on purpose; the whole occult section is either monotonous or stupid).

So then I found out that these people were full of it. That there was no occult stuff in D&D the only real satanism in heavy metal was in band so lame other bands made fun of them. In other words I found out I'd been lied to for the better part of 10 years by these people, people that were supposed to be authorities in my fiath, people that were supposed to be guiding me towards being a better Christian. Once I stopped believing some of them it was a pretty fast drive away from believing any of it. Now I hold no grudge againstthe faith, but I do hold a grudge against those that make a profession of telling people about the "hidden dangers" of their hobby and all the "terrible consequences" it will have on their souls. And I hold that grudge because I know for certain that if any of this is having a toll on people's souls it's these idjits that are alienating people from the faith that I once had.

That has meaning coming from a fellow Zappahead (which, let's face it, is what will always brand us as their enemy). Thanks.

Thanks Mary Ann. Don't worry I always stay close to the faith. I believe very strongly in the value system and the basic good that value system can mean for people. What I don't believe in are the more mystical aspects (could also be related to finding out just how bogus the occult is, once you work your way through debunking one brand of spiritualism). Except for the actually going to church and praying and stuff I'm right there with the Christian duties (my Christian Coalition coworker (who's the guy that turned me onto FR) says I score better on their Christian Values test than a lot of folks in Congress that claim to have the faith, it's one of our points of humor) of kindness, charity, loyalty, honor (you know, 7 out of the 10 commandments). And I still care about the faith and I'm with you guys on a lot of issues (the ACLU censorship things make my blood boil).

Stay well, I'm with you.
Joe

" One character is named Vablatsky (a play on the name of Madame Blavatsky, a theosophist of the 19th century). A class in "Transfiguration" (regardless of its sacrilegious context for us Muggles) also hints at familiarity with the "New Age" belief in stages of enlightenment, including that of "transfiguration". A closer reading might also reveal a woman author plagued by the perpetual adolescence of the rest of her generation and with very probable extracurricular interests in the occult. "

Whom are you quoting? You have quotes but aren't attributing the words to another speaker.
