Thanksgiving and who's working on Friday?

Posted on 11/20/2001 1:01:04 PM PST by Tumbleweed_Connection

I realize there are industries which demand an employee's presence on Friday (banking, retail, automobile...), but just curious about those who have the opportunity to create a personal day if in fact the office is open, those who plan on being ill, those whose businesses are closed for the weekend...

Secondly, how does everyone handle Thanksgiving cooking? Personally we ended the family crap and started going to a cafeteria style restaurant, cheating all the way around.

I took Friday and Monday off so my wife and I can drive (that's right, drive) down to Alabama for Thanksgiving. It'll be mom, uncles, aunts, cousins, sister. Looking forward to it. I love Thanksgiving. It's probably my favorite holiday.

Hospitals don't close on Thaksgiving, Christmas, New Year, or any other day. I'm an RN. I'm off this Thanksgiving but working on Christmas. I'm on call for 4 hours on Friday.

Ok, as a consulting engineer, our office will be technically closed on Friday, but I as the office manager and a stockholder in the company, it looks like I will be in the office working on a critical project that is to repair a failed piece of equipment. It is a holiday for our company. I will try to work just half the day if possible.

As to cooking, my wife hosts the our family and her sister's family Dinner. That means I have been helping with the cleaning and will help with some of the cooking. Her sister will bring over a turkey early in the morning and put it in our oven to cook all day. I will help peel the potatoes, apples, etc. and assist with the pie and salad making chores. I usually volunteer to load the dishwasher as it gets me out of talking too much with my sister's family.

Therefore, we cook as a team effort, lay the food out in the kitchen and serve ourselves. Then we move to the dinning room and use the good china and silverware for a fancy dinner.

May you have a great Thanksgiving and be blessed with family and friends company.

I always use this four-day weekend to get the Christmas lights up on the house.

What kept you? I have a neighbor here in east Tennessee who had their TREE up and decorated on October 10th!!! It must be artificial, because I saw it this afternoon, and it was still green. I have NEVER seen anyone put their tree up this early!

Bummer. I work in the defense industry, which has its perks. We get about the same amount of holidays as anyone else, but they tend to backload 'em at Christmas. So, we get a 4 day weekend at Thanksgiving, then the whole week off from Christmas Eve to after New Year's. Not a bad way to go, its like an extra week of vacation if you don't the dry spell of holidays in the 1st 5 months of the year.

My work is open until noon on Thanksgiving and the day after . I, however, am not working either day.

As for dinner I am making it traditional style for hubby, the 2 kids, my sister and I. Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, homemade bread, corn casserole, and pumpkin pie

Also an RN. I don't recall ever having the day after Thanksgiving off. Shoot, I'm happy if I have Thanksgiving off - this is my year to work. Hospital cafeteria Turkey for me.

What's the latest with radiation oncology? I read earlier this year about the new success with ovarian cancer.

Both the wife and I have Friday off.

Tradition is that I do the turkey, stuffing and gravy, and the wife does the mashed potatoes and other goodies. My recipe for turkey is from the 1943 American Woman's Cookbook, and I still use Pepperidge Farm stuffing, like we used to when you could only get it (in Seattle) from Frederick & Nelsons.

There is a little known reason that banks are open on Friday. It is AGAINST THE LAW for banks to be closed for more than 3 consecutive days.

I work on an equties trading desk so I'll be working too. Yes, financial institutions like banks, stockmarket cannot be closed for more than 72 hours.

You too?? In my house I think it is the socks that escape from the dryer that do the dirty deed.

Fried turkey.

Now, that is interesting. How long was the stock market closed after 9/11? I wonder why that law was enacted. Must have something to do with the depression years I suppose.

Anyway, I will work Fri. but it is like a day off because I will be there almost by myself. Ah, glorious solitude!
Happy Thanksgiving!
