I would like to see one named 'CSS Forrest', in honor of Confederate History month.

On your first question - it may be able to float, and move around, but there's a ton of work to do adding equipment, furniture, fixtures, etc. Command center electronics, CIWS (Phalanxes), air defence missle launchers, radars, kitchens, aircraft maintenance shops, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Ooh, yeah - I'm an Army brat ;-)

>>The trend has actually been to name them after major Presidents<<
John F Kennedy? Major!?

USS BATFISH SSN-681

A ship named after Clinton shouldn't be hauling garbage....

That was a good read. Incidentally, the third and final boat of the Seawolf get's saddled with the unfortunate monicker of Jimmy Carter.

Take your pick: either the USS United States, CVA-58, or the USS Forrestal, CVA-59.

Carl Vinson was known in the Navy as "Uncle Carl," because the Vinson-Trammel Act allowed the Navy to build up to its maximum treaty strength before World War II and made subsequent expansion much easier.

Only one class of submarine (the 688) used city names.
The New Attack Submarine will (so far) use state names, starting with the class boat USS Virginia (SSN-774), followed by Texas and Hawaii

AS I've said before: the garbage scow, however lowly, serves a useful function in the fleet. It hauls away rubbish. The sink emperor, on the other hand, should be hauled away
as garbage.

Were you on the Bat Boat? If so, when? I was on from '85-'91.

Somehow I don't think we're going to see a USS William J. Clinton anytime soon. Sure we will. It will be the name of a hospital ship used to treat victims of STDs. Other ships in that class will be the USS Monica Lewinski, the USS Fanny Fox, the USS Wilbur Mills, the USS Gary Harpence, and the USS Donna Rice. The Brits are going to buy a ship in that class and call it HMS Ruby Keeler.
(Hey for grins, anyone remember the SF novel that took place, in part on the Ruby Keeler?)

I wasn't, a good friend was.

Naming two of our most significant fleet units after Stennis and Vinson is a disgrace, pure and simpleWith all due respect, those two were wise enough to use their very considerable powers to maintain and promote a strong military construction program, sometimes in opposition to those in the executive and legislative branches who would have slashed the armed forces beyond repair. Without folks like those in Congress, our Navy would would have been reduced to rust years ago and the cold war would have remained quite hot. Even today, veterans groups in Georgia still honor Vinson when they gain nothing by doing so. He was the first person to witness the launching of a U.S. Navy ship named after him. Those honors indicate more than just political back-scratching. They indicate respect.

Wow, everytime I read of the battlefield heroism of these guys I am in total awe. Like the story of Dan Daley, who won the Medal of Honor, TWICE!
In his performance during WWI when he motivated all his Marines during intense combat he yelled, "Come on, you sons of bitches! Do you want to live forever."
These were not the words of a coward.

I saw no real answer to the question you asked to start this thread- how the hell did Joh n Stennis come to have a billion-dollar Carrier named for him? Or Carl Vinson? This is pandering, pure and simple. You typed the real answer in that last sentence.
